The U.S. legal system stands as a cornerstone of our democracy, with women making significant contributions throughout its history. For over a century, women have argued cases, defended clients, and shaped the laws that govern our daily lives. From the pioneering efforts of Belva Lockwood, the first woman admitted to the Bar of the Supreme Court in 1879, to Sandra Day O'Connor's groundbreaking appointment as the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court in 1981, their impact is undeniable. Despite comprising 39.51% of the over 1.3 million lawyers in the United States, women, especially women of color, still face challenges in attaining leadership roles within the legal profession. In 2023, while women of color represented 17.54% of law firm associates, they accounted for just 4.89% of partners. However, the legal landscape continues to evolve, with demand for lawyers projected to increase by 8% from 2022 to 2032, outpacing the average growth rate for all occupations. This growth presents opportunities for women to further shape the future of the legal profession. Hannah's inspiring piece of advice for fellow women in law: "My main piece of advice is that it is okay not to know an answer and to ask somebody else’s opinion. Asking for help isn’t a sign of a weakness and you can learn so much from others. It is also so important to be kind to yourself. This industry can carry a lot of pressure and therefore you need to take care of yourself first: you can’t pour from an empty cup."
