Yesterday, the U.S. Climate Alliance announced the Governors' Climate-Ready Workforce Initiative, which calls for members to work to collectively support 1 million new workers in completing Registered Apprenticeship programs across the coalition by 2035. The initiative aims to accelerate the development of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive climate-ready workforce and expand career pathways for new and existing workers into the good-paying jobs that will be created as the United States advances its climate goals and works toward a just economic and energy transition. As part of this Alliance, Maine will join Massachusetts in leading the Clean Buildings and Industry area, focused on careers in engineering, design, construction, retrofitting, maintenance, and operation of buildings and industrial processes that are clean, energy-efficient, healthy, and resilient. The U.S. Climate Alliance?introduced the Governors' Climate-Ready Workforce Initiative this week, a bipartisan group of 24 governors representing about 60% of the nation's economy and 55% of its population. This initiative is designed to expand career opportunities in clean energy and climate sectors, promote workforce diversity, and collaboratively train one million new registered apprentices by 2035 across the Alliance's states and territories. The Biden-Harris administration's Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act are projected to generate millions of additional high-paying union jobs in climate-related fields in the coming years. This builds on previous federal investments and proactive state climate measures that have already led to a notable increase in such jobs. The initiative encompasses high-quality employment opportunities not only in clean energy and technology—such as wind, solar, electric vehicles, energy efficiency, and batteries—but also in areas focused on climate resilience and natural climate solutions. By 2035, the states and territories within the Alliance will collaborate to assist one million new workers in completing Registered Apprenticeship programs. These programs, recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor or federally approved State Apprenticeship Agencies, provide a valuable and proven career path, allowing individuals to gain hands-on experience while earning a wage in essential industries that address and mitigate climate change. “The launch of this Initiative coincides with unprecedented federal investments and ambitious state climate actions that have led to significant growth in well-paying union jobs in climate-ready sectors, with millions more expected in the future due to the Biden–Harris administration’s Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This includes high-quality positions in clean energy and technology and in fields related to climate resilience and natural climate solutions,” stated the U.S. Climate Alliance. Glad for the opportunity to table last week at at the Wentworth University "Sustainability Street" along with Michael McCord, co-founder at Boston Green Action. As part of a larger Wentworth event, we were able to discuss climate initiatives across various industries and how students can get engaged, right now, right here in the City of Boston. More than ever, it's important to have these conversations to the current and future drivers of change - us, the youth, the students. The biggest takeaway from the event was that climate outreach must be tailored to the audience to maximise effectiveness. While it's as crucial as ever to talk of ambitious global climate goals and lofty projects, I found that the "hook" for many students is something tangible, something that they can have a meaningful part in. Outreach must show a way forward to students in which they feel fulfilled and active rather than being cogs in a machine-like process - however benevolent that process may be. As such, conversations that I had with students often drifted towards infrastructure electrification, architecture, green spaces and grassroots advocacy- often accompanied with an empowering acknowledgement on the part of the students, as they realised just how much they can do at the local level, as individuals. Another key takeaway is including tangible incentives for students when making an "ask" for climate advocacy and participation. While activists themselves recognise the urgency of climate action from both a logical and emotional lens, many youth may not be as "tuned in" or as motivated (at least initially) to play a part. Regardless of what field a student wishes to make a career in, highlighting experience, skills and connections to be made in the rapidly expanding climate space is a pragmatic way to get more students involved. Looking forward to continuing my engagement in the climate space and meeting interesting folks in Boston and beyond!

Missed the conversation on Green Skills: Retraining a nation at the #GreenJobsRevolution held at The Conduit? ?? The demand for #GreenSkills in the UK is surging with a remarkable 46% increase in the share of job ads requiring green skills over the past 12 months ?? There is a skills gap that threatens to undermine our progress towards the UK's climate targets for 2030 and 2050 ?? What does this mean for educators, skills providers, and skilled workers? Hear more from the session with Guido Schmidt-Traub, Partner at Systemiq, Kate O'Sullivan, LinkedIn and Steve Coulter, Green Alliance, where they discuss the demand for green skills and how we can ensure future and current workers are equipped for emerging green jobs. ?? It's heartening to see New York state's state university and SUNY Chancellor John King committing to "Education about Climate Change and its Impacts," "Research for Climate Solutions," and "Green Workforce Development" in SUNY's latest draft Sustainability Action Plan. It's also heartening to see more colleges offering climate studies (UC San Diego is instituting a climate change course requirement; Warren Wilson College in NC is offering a new Master of Science in Applied Climate Studies). We need similar leadership at the K-12 level so that students have a foundation of understanding about the climate emergency and are primed for these opportunities in college from an early age. We also need our Governor, budget officials, and state policymakers to recognize the urgency of expanding K-16 climate education, as well as the need to train teachers to be climate ready. Given the extreme hurricanes that are pummeling large swaths of the U.S., we needed this commitment long ago.

With the world shifting towards clean energy, career opportunities are booming. As highlighted by NPR, President Biden's new climate program, Climate Corps, aims to provide training and certifications for young people looking to find work that will positively affect the environment. The newly launched program expects to place over 20,000 people in jobs, internships, and fellowships that will prepare them to join the growing clean-energy and climate-resilience workforce. It offers opportunities across different sectors, including clean energy, food systems, urban areas, community resilience, capacity building, and public lands and waters. You can read more about the Climate Corps initiative and the expansion of the renewable energy sector in the whole story below. #GenZ #ClimateAction #CleanEnergy #EarthDay?
