Overall, the private messages I have had from summer students about their experiences have been quite positive. Perhaps most gratifying is that they really appreciate their fellow summer students. Three things they would like to see: 1 immediate substantive feedback from those they are working for 2 more time spent in sessions with leading partners on what skills and strengths they prioritize in those who work with them and how to develop them 3 more education on the business of law-what is the firm strategy, areas for more emphasis; how do you make your money -big clients, more clients, higher rates, more hours-how does it work -we can read the strategy of most businesses. What is yours?

Now that applications are open, here are tips for your cover letters. ?? Applications are open until mid-January, so you have time to craft the perfect letter. All of these tips are my personal POV and not necessarily the views of all White & Case recruiters. 1?? Tell us why you are interested in White & Case LLP, specifically. What is it about our work, our people, or our program that made you apply for this program? If you met our attorneys at an event, completed a Forage course, attended a webinar, or anything else - let us know the impact of those experiences. 2?? Highlight the location you're applying for. If it's not obvious via your permanent address or the law school you're going to, let us know why you've selected the office that you're applying to. 3?? Explain your interests. As a first-semester 1L, you certainly don't need to have an idea of what you want to practice. However, if you have an idea of what you'd like to explore, let us know! Whether it's litigation, transactional, or just "cross-border" work, that helps us understand you a bit more. And, if you don't have an idea, let us know what courses have interested you the most or which ones you're looking forward to. 4?? A cover letter is not a resume in paragraph format. So often, I read a resume and then find that the cover letter is a regurgitation of the same content in a different format. Tell us a story, tell us your goals, tell us your passions - do not tell us what jobs you held and the responsibilities you had. 5?? As simple as it may seem...address it to the correct Firm. There's nothing that shows lack of attention to detail like receiving a cover letter addressed to a competitor. #coverletter #legalinternship #biglaw
