As the holiday season approaches, many of us look for meaningful ways to give back to our communities. If you’re considering donating or volunteering, it’s important to ensure your efforts truly help those in need. While well-known organizations like Salvation Army and Goodwill are often top of mind, it’s worth noting that these groups have been criticized for practices that don’t tend to prioritize getting resources directly to those in need. In fact they kinda suck at it. Goodwill has non profit status but works in a FOR profit model. However THAT works ?!? And that guy ringing the bell outside your local grocer? Don’t do it. If you want your money to really make a difference, support local food banks and soup kitchens. Here are some great orgs that make a huge difference on the ground. 1. Feeding America Partners with a vast network of food banks and pantries to provide meals to millions. Highly rated for financial efficiency and transparency, this organization ensures your contributions go toward solving food insecurity. https://lnkd.in/ep48Kfkn 2. Meals on Wheels America Delivers nutritious meals directly to seniors, combating hunger and isolation among the elderly. With volunteer opportunities nationwide, it’s a great way to get involved locally. https://lnkd.in/eDTqQVhD 3. No Kid Hungry Focused on ending childhood hunger, this organization connects children to effective nutrition programs and advocates for improved food access policies. https://lnkd.in/e3ZXZSqy Local to Boston 1. The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) Serving Eastern Massachusetts, GBFB distributes food to those in need and offers numerous ways to volunteer. https://www.gbfb.org/ 2. Food For Free Based in Cambridge, Food For Free improves access to healthy food through partnerships and creative programs, with plenty of volunteer opportunities available. https://foodforfree.org/ If you are in need yourself, here are some great resources. Feeding America’s Food Bank Locator- Enter your zip code to find local food banks and pantries. https://lnkd.in/eNJWq2uk USDA National Hunger Hotline Call 1-866-3-HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479) for help locating food resources nearby. https://lnkd.in/empfUiwD A directory of free or reduced-cost services, including food assistance, based on your location. https://www.findhelp.org/ These groups focus directly on delivering resources to those in need. Your donations are used efficiently and with transparency, ensuring the maximum impact on hunger relief. This holiday season, consider shifting your support to these impactful organizations and help make a real difference in the lives of people experiencing food insecurity.

Protecting, Connecting and Thriving: We Are All Public Health "Public health is more than just health care. It's the steps we take to make sure our neighborhoods and environment are free from pollution. It's making sure our food and water are safe to eat and drink. It's also the relationships we foster in our communities. We're all interconnected. When we all come together to support public health, all of us?— individuals, families, communities and the public health field?— can achieve the goals of public health." https://nphw.org/ #nphw #publichealth #womeninpublichealth

A big, big thanks to Sophie’s Legacy, & Charlotte, for this, and for all of the good work you have done in the past!!! I think that ALL children’s hospitals in the UK should see this booklet!!! **I also especially believe that ALL of the many children’s hospitals in the UK, that STILL do not provide ANY food for parents or carers to eat ON THE WARD along with their young patients, should see the words below which are taken from the booklet: “Feeding Guardians / Carers: Often parents or carers will stay with their children when they are admitted, but it is not often that there is a food provision other than the on-site retail options in hospitals. A survey conducted in 2022 revealed parents on average would spend an additional £405 per week when their baby is in hospital. This included childcare, loss of income and transport, as well as food. We encourage all hospitals to provide suitable food provision for carers and parents of those children and young people (CYP), that are in our care, reducing the financial strain or even that lack of food during this time. Patients can be reluctant for their carers to leave their bedside no matter how short that break may be, consequently they may not have the opportunity to nourish themselves while their child is in hospital. A food provision for parents can help reduce this burden mentally and financially as well as stimulating the social aspect of recovery, especially as hospital admissions can last for weeks.” …or even for months, as I know from personal experience! ????? #sophieslegacy #creatingchange #improvechildrensfood #feedtheparents
So excited to share this with you all. Huge thanks to Nick Vadis for getting behind Sophie's wish of improving children's food. Big thanks also to NHS Supply Chain and Foodbuy UK. Sophie would be so proud. #sophieslegacy #creatingchange #nhsfood
