CEO DISCRIPTION What is a CEO (chief executive officer)? The CEO is ultimately responsible for the company's success or failure. They oversee its various functions, including operations, finance, marketing, sales, human resources (HR), legal, compliance and IT. They do all this while balancing the needs of employees, customers, investors and other stakeholders. The CEO title most often applies to for-profit businesses whose size, in terms of employee numbers or revenue, justifies this top position. Some nonprofit organizations also choose to have their most senior person hold the CEO title. In some cases, business laws require the use of the CEO title. Corporations, by law, must have CEOs, other chief officers and boards of directors. A limited liability company can structure itself like a corporation and have a CEO, but the role isn't required by law. As a leader, how often do you still have 1:1 time with your management team? As the business expands and responsibilities grow, it's easy to let regular one-to-ones slip. Kirsten, our Head of Finance, and I aim to meet up every month at our favourite lunch spot, Vigour, in St. Helen's. We talk about how the business is doing, areas where we are performing well and areas that need development. I hope my fellow directors will forgive me for saying before Kirsten joined the business, our finances were pretty chaotic! We weren't costing jobs accurately and we were placing unnecessary strain on other areas of the business too. Kirsten has been the driving force for change in our processes, drawing upon the tried and tested expertise she has gained throughout her career.
