Water restriction alters seed bank traits and ecology in Atlantic Forest seasonal forests under climate change "The research explores how the soil seed bank, crucial for forest regeneration, may be affected by projected climate change. In a seasonal forest within the Atlantic Forest, seed germination, ecological attributes, and functional traits were evaluated under different climate scenarios and water levels. The results indicate that water scarcity, especially in future warmer scenarios, could significantly reduce seed viability and the forests' regeneration capacity. This suggests that the persistence of prolonged droughts may compromise the structure and resilience of seasonal forests in the future." We’ve been working with P.hD student Aakash Basi, the University of Birmingham, the Wildlife Trust, and the Canal and Rivers Trust on Aakash’s project, ‘“Cleaning-up legacy pollution from industry: A template for marginal brownfield remediation”. ?? Aakash has a few words to share about himself and his project: ‘My project focuses on novel ways to remove heavy metals from urban soils, particularly phytoremediation – the use of plants as remediators - as an alternative to physical and chemical treatment. The focus is to encourage soil health and biodiversity, as studies have proven these are essential to efficient remediation. ?? As such, my current experiments use companion cropping, observing how different species can support each other and improve soil health. My aim is to develop an effective template for urban brownfield remediation with the hope that techniques such as phytoremediation can become widely adopted. ??? Working with Grand Union has already been exciting as it puts into perspective the real-life impact of this research area. It also gives a chance for people outside of the academia bubble to have their voices heard, opening the door to connect my research with different communities.‘ ??? Climate Lab to Create Crops for "Tomorrow's Atmosphere Today" Rose was thrilled to assist the University of Essex in delivering their unique plant lab, designed to place researchers at the forefront of the fight against climate change by creating crops for "tomorrow's atmosphere today." Our skilled team reconfigured the space to include a new communal corridor and finished areas for the specialised vertical and growth farms, complete with new lab benches, decorations, and M&E installations, including compressed air and reverse osmosis water systems. The new flagship facility at the University of Essex will enable scientists to adapt plants for a hotter, drier planet as food security faces increasing threats. It features a state-of-the-art, commercially standard vertical farm, an indoor field that can replicate real environments from around the globe, and suites that simulate a warming world by allowing researchers to adjust CO2 concentration and temperature levels. Advanced computer plant scanning technology will monitor plant growth and identify precise changes in photosynthesis. This research will be supported by AI and robotics, which will develop new ideas, technologies, and strategies to predict changes in agriculture and the natural world. The Smart Technology Experimental Plant Suite (STEPS) will devise strategies to optimize plant performance while working towards net zero emissions. It will also foster connections within the community and develop relationships in agriculture, horticulture, and technology businesses. The facility builds on the work of the influential Essex Plant Innovation Centre (EPIC), which brings together farmers, technologists, and scientists to improve crop resilience to drought, increase yields, and secure the food chain during extreme weather events. Students will be at the forefront, helping to develop and conduct experiments with the university’s internationally renowned researchers, providing a unique undergraduate experience and training opportunity. Young scientists can now begin their careers in this cutting-edge facility, unique to Essex. Microplastics pose a threat to Great Bay Estuary – a vital ecosystem at the heart of coastal New Hampshire. UNH researchers Bonnie Brown and Gregg Moore, with the help of graduate and undergraduate students, are leading crucial studies on how these tiny pollutants affect our estuary. Their work is helping us understand where microplastics come from, where they settle and how long they stay in our waters. Great Bay isn't just any body of water. It's a critical habitat for marine life, a natural filter for our oceans and an essential resource for our region's growing shellfish industry. Our research teams are creating models to track these pollutants, giving local aquaculturists, fishers and environmental managers the data they need to protect this precious ecosystem. Peatlands store 25% of the Earth’s surface carbon, twice that of all the world’s forests combined! Threatened by human activities, they contribute 5% to global anthropogenic CO2-emissions. Regenerating peatlands proactively provides solutions to climate change, biodiversity loss, floods, droughts, wildfires and water quality degradation. However, most river restoration projects today overlook the regeneration of peat within river valleys, despite its huge potential and historical prevalence. I’m very happy that NWO (Dutch Research Council) provides me with the opportunity to address this issue, thanks to the personal scientific Veni grant I recently received. In the coming four years my research project ‘All you can peat’ will unravel peat-river dynamics, predict optimal regeneration conditions and identify peat-growth hotspots in river valleys. @Wageningen University & Research ? We are surrounded by an endless beauty of greenery when it comes to plants. There are hundreds of thousands of plant speeies, all with different looks & purposes. ? ?? Even if a set of plants are from the same species, there is always a difference between the individuals, its called “biological variation” in science & needs to be accounted for. ? ??It basically means, each plant is its own little individual, just like humans. ? ?? Now, plant scientists pick certain plants to research, because let’s say, we consume them most. Or they can clean out polluted areas of our planet. And there are certain trends and societal issues that dictate that as well. ? ??♀?New technologies develop and Scientist try to apply them to those plants, but it often does not work, or only with a very limited set of species or even individuals. Why? We dont know! ? ??Maybe it is worth to try to find ways to adapt the technologies, to be able to work with more plant species? ? ??Maybe its also worthy to not isolate the plant species or the individual, but also take the ecological context into consideration, meaning: all the other plants & species around? ? ??The thing is, we do not live & exist in isolation, none of us! Not humans, not plants, not animals, not bacteria, not funghi. We are interconnected beings, one big blob inhabiting earth! ? ??Yet, sometimes we need to simplify our approach… you see, trying to investigate & research our surrounding is not always straight forward… if you could choose, just for fun: ? ??Which plant would you like to investigate and why??? Today’s agricultural system is facing a critical moment. Low genetic gains in our major crops and environmental degradation are impacting global food security, compounded by an unpredictably changing climate. Representing 450 Gt of global carbon, plants are a critical lever for addressing these interconnected challenges, but the pace of agricultural innovation has been slow. Synthetic biology is revolutionising the world of healthcare with novel approaches to drug production, CRISPR therapeutic treatments and the advent of personalised genomics. Could we leverage advances in synthetic biology to unlock the power of plants and safeguard our agricultural industry? Our programme thesis Synthetic Plants for a Sustainable Future is led by ARIA Programme Director Angie Burnett, and sets out a vision for unlocking new plant capabilities to meet the future needs of humankind. By uniting expertise in plant and synthetic biology, we’ll aim to design, build, and deliver synthetic chromosomes and synthetic chloroplasts that are viable in a living plant, and imbue plants with new suites of functionality – from reducing agricultural water use to protecting crop yields in uncertain conditions. We’re now seeking the expertise of cell biologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, geneticists, plant biologists, plant synthetic biologists, non-plant synthetic biologists, systems biologists, social scientists, and ethicists. Presentation model of the future capability of indicator systems In the Digital Futures Project framework, we are attempting to assign criteria to determine the future capability of global and EU-level measurement systems and test them on a pilot basis. As a result of our development work so far, we proposed 3 + 1 aspects for testing, which was carried out on the European Innovation Scoreboard measuring system. 1. Temporal examination: with what temporal "lag" does the indicator system follow the description of a phenomenon, that is when the data are available from the reference year, from month to month (T+? year/month). 2. The ability to "see" into the future 1. Does the measurement system provide input on what can be expected in the future? We examine this with the time series moving stably on a trend line. 3. The ability to "see" into the future 2 What proportion of the indicators of the measurement system are predictive indicators. Indicators are classified at the level of innovation policy interventions: leading, coincident and following indicators. +1 Balance according to pillars of future capability: The future capability of the indicator system can also be examined in a complementary manner by analyzing the proportion of indicators present - according to Szántó's four pillars of future capability - ecology, and geopolitics, technology, society-economy and culture approach. A balanced ratio of these points to future potential. We propose creating a new "Future monitoring" evaluation model, which is a hybrid model for evaluating indicators. It is made by combining the project indicator types and the DPSIR system. Our goal is to examine the extent to which the measurement system describes processes and to what extent the proportion of indicators describing process stages is balanced. The indicator categories are driving force, pressure, output, outcome, impact, and response. The Digital Futures Project is part of the Future Potentials Observatory (FPO).
