I never imagined my diagnosis could invite days like this: And yet these are the days that inspire the most trust that I'm exactly where I'm meant to be. Doing work that feels fully aligned with a deeper calling. Story sharing. Patient advocacy. Health equity. To combine my media background, exec skills, and patient insights for good. To recognize all the privilege I've found and help those who consistently lack it. And, alongside all that, to also help myself, in moments I need, to trust I can make a difference. To help me find meaning in a path not chosen, yet nonetheless mine. Last week brought one of the most incredible days. A full day of filming, alongside my family, for what will be a couple of documentary-style videos to support others navigating metastatic breast cancer. While I'll share the videos once they're ready, for now, for today, this post is about believing. Believing what I never imagined when first diagnosed: - Our toughest journeys can bring multiple bright lights - Leaning into meaning is a choice we can gift ourselves - Finding opportunities within obstacles builds resilience What would you add to this list? A Year of Battles, Lessons, and the Unseen Strength Within Today isn’t just another day for me—it marks exactly one year since my first breast cancer surgery, and coincidentally today, I face my second! This coincidence isn’t just a reminder of the challenges I've faced; it’s a stark symbol of the ongoing fight many of us silently endure. Breast cancer touches 1 in 8 women, making it more common than the number of people who will graduate from college. It's a reality that too many of us live with, yet it's often hidden behind the professional facades we maintain. My journey over the past year has been filled with ups and downs, fear and fortitude, and an overwhelming sense of vulnerability that has somehow, paradoxically, made me stronger. This experience has taught me more than I could have ever imagined—about resilience, the incredible support of loved ones and colleagues, and not least, the vital importance of prioritizing our health, even with our busy schedules. We, as dedicated professionals, often put our careers and daily responsibilities before our well-being, but this journey has reinforced how essential our health truly is. Breast Cancer Awareness Month may be ending, but the need for awareness isn’t confined to any single month. Early detection through measures like mammograms can save lives, and it saved mine. It’s easy to let our health take a back seat when our professional lives demand so much of us, but this experience has taught me that nothing—no deadline, meeting, or project—is more important than our health. I share this part of my story to ignite a conversation we often shy away from in professional circles. It’s okay to show vulnerability. It’s okay to ask for support. And it’s absolutely necessary to prioritize your health, always! To those who are currently fighting this battle, know that you are NOT ALONE. To those who support us, your role is invaluable. To those who haven't yet scheduled their check-up: please make the time. It could save your life! Two Cents Tuesday *The importance of checking*. (Or: How a 5-minute decision saved my life) Today, I'm sharing something personal. As October - Breast Cancer Awareness month - draws to a close, I want to tell you my story as a thriver ?? I was 26. Young. Invincible (or so I thought). With a one-and-a-half-year-old baby at home when I heard those words no one expects to hear. You have cancer. That was half a lifetime ago. Wasn't I immortal? Apparently not... But thanks to my brother, Abraham (Avi) Lebenthal an accomplished surgeon - who insisted that "possible fibroadenoma means remove now" ?? - and the incredible doctors at Hadassah Medical Center, I'm here writing these lines. Half a lifetime later, and the proud mother of 3 amazing boys. That early detection and treatment prove how cancer can be caught on time, and treated. Here's the thing: We're living in 2024. We've got self-driving cars and AI in our pockets. Yet somehow, we're still losing too many lives to late detection. My two cents this Tuesday? GET CHECKED. Have YOU checked? Because honestly - it's a no-brainer. Those few minutes could literally save your life. They saved mine. Let's reframe this: Getting checked isn't just a medical appointment - it's the most important meeting you could schedule with yourself. That's my two cents this Tuesday, straight from the heart. ?? ?? With International Women's Day tomorrow, I want to talk about an issue close to many of us: breast cancer. Did you know that about 1 in 8 women will face this diagnosis in their lifetime? I did’t know this statistic until I received my diagnosis late last year - when my big travel plans suddenly became big surgery plans... While the risk is real, early detection can be life-saving and could result in a much easier treatment pathway - like it did for me. Here are three tools every woman can use: 1?? Self-Examination: Regular self-checks can help you become familiar with your body and notice any changes. It's a simple step that can make a big difference. I’ve included a link to the Susan G Kamen Self Exam guide in the comments.? 2?? Proactive Screening Checkups: Don't skip those routine mammograms and screenings. So many women I know deprioritise proactive screenings. I am hoping after witnessing my experience, that will change.? 3?? Know Your Risk Factors and Family History: Understanding your personal risk factors and family history can guide you and your healthcare provider in scheduling earlier proactive screenings.?In France, for example, you wouldn’t receive a proactive screening invitation until after 40 - but if Breast Cancer runs in your family, earlier screening may be recommended by your doctor. Active listening is one of the key topics on our Workplace Cancer Support Ambassador training course. It's a vital skill when supporting work colleagues who are facing a cancer diagnosis. We often think we are good listeners, but if we take time to really reflect on our listening skills, we can start to recognise that there are ways in which we can improve. Although it can be helpful to improve active listening in all areas of our life, in day to day conversation, it may not need challenging to the same degree. However, when you are in a support role such as the Workplace Cancer Support Ambassador role, it is important to focus on improving your active listening skills. What will help you to be a better active listener? Empathetic listening is about focusing solely on what the individual is telling you and trying to understand their perspective, rather than continually relating it back to your own experiences or how you think you would react in certain situations. Today, as I entered the cancer center again….I had a poignant reminder that it's not about the to-do list, but about human connection. As a cancer patient, I recently left a autographed book with a message for a healthcare worker whose name I struggle to recall, despite her telling me many times. What stands out is HOW she made me feel on my first day. It's moments like these that underscore the significance of human connection. It’s not about the checklist. It’s not about the tasks at hand. Woop woop! The high leg kick is back! Chemo unit appointment number... well, I lost count a while ago.???? It’s been 10 days since my skin-saving mastectomy and reconstruction—Weird milestone to celebrate, but here we are! Not gonna sugarcoat it, last week was rough. But this week? Things are looking up. The drains are finally out - hallelujah I’ve almost got full range of motion back in my arm, And if I squint real hard, I can see the tiniest hint of a a dark hairline creeping back around my ears. Progress, right? ???? Next week, I’m back to what I love: traveling to Leatherhead, and Guildford to deliver MHFA training. Then off to London talking about why cancer awareness at work matters. Because, as it turns out, I have a bit of experience in that department. ?? _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ?? Next Month is Breast Cancer Awareness month. ? Almost 900k people of working age are living with cancer in the U.K.-expected to rise to 1,150,000 by 2030 ? 86% of line managers lack training to support employees with long-term health conditions, including cancer. ? Something you might not know about me.... once upon a time (well, 2012) a smear test saved my life. Sounds dramatic, but it's true. It happened in my BL (before LinkedIn) era. I went for a routine smear test and didn't think too much about it until I got a letter a couple of weeks later saying that my test results showed "CIN 3 cells". For those not in the know, which is probably most people, CIN 3 cells are the most severe grade of cell changes before cervical cancer. A quick colposcopy later, where they took even more cells for analysis, I was diagnosed with grade 1 cervical cancer. I was very lucky in that there was the tiniest amount of cancerous cells, and I was able to have these removed with surgery, and no further treatment. But what might have happened had I missed that smear test appointment doesn't bare thinking about. I get it. Smear tests aren't exactly top of anyone's list of fun things to do. For some people, they are extremely traumatising. They can be painful. I know because I'm now firmly in this camp. Nevertheless, a two minute rummage in your foof could save your life. This week is #CervicalScreeningAwarenessWeek or #CSAW24 As a female healthcare communications specialist, I'm passionate about raising awareness of the importance of staying on time with your smear tests. So, when was your last one? Ask yourself, ask your loved ones. Anyone over the age of 25 with a cervix needs a smear test at least once every 3 years. (Don't get me started on the age change!) In observance of national #breastcancerawarenessmonth, I wanted to share that in February of this year, I was in the 4% of newly diagnosed cases under 40 years old. Because of my advocacy to have my family history taken seriously, and super early detection, my journey was much different than it could have been down the road. I'm sharing this personal news on LinkedIn for two reasons... If you've never had a conversation with your doctor about your own risk or are delaying that first or annual mammogram - schedule it today. ?? I also re-learned some life lessons while I was an employee going through a shocking medical diagnosis. 1. During my 6-week medical leave, I had no access to any work systems or email. While it was nerve-wracking at first, it was a good reminder that the most important things in life are happening right in front of you - not in your inbox. 2. Those of us with a high achiever mentality often want to feel like "they can't do it without us." A medical situation is a humbling reminder that your workplace can in fact do it without you - that's the nature of business. But, what my coworkers balanced perfectly was respecting my time away while frequently checking in on me personally, visiting, sending meals, etc. - simply letting me know I was missed and valued. And because of this, I was able to funnel my high achieving tendencies into my physical therapy and counseling instead of worrying about work. 3. Extending this even to our clients, when I shared this news with them before my leave, they didn't care about the backup plan or the timeline...all they cared about was that I was ok and had the time I needed. 4. Lastly, my coworkers understood that my healing didn't end the day I returned from either of my two surgeries. They saw me on this journey from the day of diagnosis to today, where I'm thrilled to be a cancer survivor and thriver.
