Liverpool Biennial is one of over 150 organisations participating in #CultureMakes, a nationwide campaign celebrating the 8 types of impact of culture and heritage.? ? Today we're celebrating the Economic Impact of culture ??? ? - Our independent evaluators calculated that the estimated economic impact of Liverpool Biennial 2023 was ￡13,181,039, with increased additional spend from audiences visiting from outside the area. ? ? - 37% of audiences lived within the Liverpool City Region with a further 12% from the North West, 30% were UK visitors outside the North West and 21% were international visitors.? ? - 44% of total visitors outside the local area planned a trip to Liverpool specifically for the Biennial, with 41% of LB2023 audiences staying overnight, the majority of these in hotels, bringing significant additional spend into the city.? ? - 73% agreed that they would be more likely to visit Liverpool again as a result of their experience.? ? Two years ago, we had the privilege of working with Christopher Capstick from Civilmart to create a video showcasing their support for the Longwood Football and Netball Club in rural Victoria. What started as a project to highlight CivilMart's community engagement quickly revealed the club's profound impact on the local community. When we arrived in Longwood, we were struck by the beautiful surroundings and the warmth of the locals. The club is more than just a place for sport; it's the heart of the community. It provides a safe and constructive environment for young people, a social hub for adults, and a source of pride for everyone involved. As one local aptly put it, "If Longwood lost its club, it really loses its identity." The video we created captured the essence of this remarkable community and the gratitude they feel towards their sponsors, including CivilMart. It also showcased the club's incredible journey, rebuilding from scratch and thriving with the support of dedicated individuals and sponsors. More importantly, the video has helped the football club secure additional sponsorships from businesses that are now proudly supporting them. It’s a testament to what a community can achieve when supported by dedicated partners. This project is a perfect example of how our strategic approach to video production can create win-win outcomes. By finding the right angles, we highlighted CivilMart’s community engagement and helped the Longwood Football and Netball Club attract more sponsors and support. For this #community event to work, we’re looking for people that find value in our mission, content and journey that follow whom would like to make a beneficial difference and impact in a positive way to get behind our brand. This is an amazing opportunity to network with us, add value and contribute to a great cause and support a small business- which is rarer than diamond on the internet. What we’re doing is selling our ‘Revenge of the Creator’ hats from the Tech Wars themed community event and I’ll be donating my hair to another charity for a 5th year in a row, after it grows out. Is it time for more arts organizations to buy property? Artwashing, the use of art to distract from negative actions like gentrification, highlights a critical issue: artists create value in neighborhoods, only to be displaced when property values rise. As Haven Gallery's Director in Chicago points out, "Artists create wealth, and it gets extracted from us." This challenge inspired the founding of Equity Arts, a nonprofit focused on disrupting this cycle. By purchasing property through innovative models like the Perpetual Purpose Trust (PPT), Equity Arts aims to maintain control and stability for artists while fostering community development. This approach combines a for-profit LLC and a 501c3 nonprofit, opening up diverse funding opportunities beyond traditional philanthropy. In Boston, the Ujima Project, led by Black artists, stabilizes spaces for local businesses through a democratically controlled investment fund, allowing community members to invest and decide on business support. This model emphasizes artists as entrepreneurs, integrating them into financial mechanisms that protect against rising real estate costs. Equity Arts' model is designed to demonstrate the economic value of arts-stewarded real estate, aiming to secure both philanthropic and traditional funding. This initiative can provide discounted rent for startup businesses, using net income to support arts programming and grants. The ultimate goal is artist self-determination, ensuring that development benefits the existing culture rather than displacing it.
