Yesterday, I had an unexpected trip down memory lane when I took a taxi for the first time in a very long time. Heading to a meeting at the airport, my Uber ride cost me around $23. But when it was time to return, the surge pricing kicked in, and the fare shot up to $80! Everyone who has been to Darwin knows that everything is only 10-15 minutes away, so there was now way known I was going to pay that much for the ride. Needless to say I jumped into a Taxi instead and paid $31 for the return fare. Personally, I’m not a fan of the surge pricing model. To me it feels far too opportunistic to harbour long term relationships and is the equivalent to kicking someone while they’re down. While I was heading home, I reflected on the experience, the profound impact technology has on traditional industries and how if not properly monitored, their conveniences could come at a personal cost. Uber, a perfect example of disruptive innovation, has significantly transformed the taxi industry. Yet, my recent experience highlighted that traditional services still hold their ground, offering value and opportunities within the marketplace. Reflecting on this, it's clear that while new technologies bring convenience and change, there's still a place for the tried-and-true. They continue to provide quality and reliability, proving that old technologies can coexist and thrive alongside the new. We live in an age in which we need to embrace innovation, but because that innovation is still in its infancy, we still appreciate the value of what has stood the test of time. As we look towards the future, it's clear that AI is emerging as the next disruptive technology. While there are many fears about AI replacing human jobs, it's important to remember that there are still an abundance of opportunities for humans and AI to coexist and thrive together. By embracing this change, we can harness the potential of AI to enhance our performance, productivity and continue to create value in the marketplace.
