What's the first thing you do when you start a new job or start working with a new client? I challenge every. Single. Assumption. Not because I don't trust the previous marketing team, but because you first have to know where you are now ?? and have a very clear idea of where you want to go ??. I've found that too many people avoid asking those tough questions? or don't even think to go there in the first place. Sure, curiosity killed the cat... or so the saying goes. But guess what? It's also the key to an effective marketing strategy. What's the first thing that you do? #newjob #newclientonboarding #questioneverything

One of the things I've consistently?forgotten?to do in my career is to take stock of the large projects I've worked on. This is useful for a number of reasons: - Main one: Give yourself a pat on the back for a hard job well done! - Reflect on what went well vs could've been done better - Build your career narrative, for internal promotion or a new role elsewhere - To think about how to build momentum from the work done so far So I built?this deck?to try and capture some of this thinking. It's not a retro on the launch, but an attempt to capture some of the process, work done, and tangible assets created – in one place. Perhaps this will help anyone doing a rebrand/brand launch. Happy to chat through any of the challenges we faced along the way.

I’ve always believed a job could be more than a job. And that each move could be a move toward gradually building something uniquely valuable. So, with that in mind, I have an announcement. But first, since I haven’t historically spent much time here on LinkedIn – an introduction to how I got here. My career journey has always been shaped by a curiosity for diverse creative challenges. From advertising to PR, tech startups to studios, each project has allowed me to see the broader picture. As I look back, I realize there’s value in the seemingly disparate creative challenges. Each one gradually forms your own unique creative profile, if you let them. Joining Pennant Video feels like a natural culmination of that journey, an opportunity to not only guide creative vision but to partner with a team that aligns with my passion for pushing boundaries and exploring new creative territories. It’s not just about stellar motion graphics and design; it’s about creating stories that resonate, shaping unique client profiles, and working with like-minded individuals who share the same hunger for something extraordinary. This next step isn’t just professional—it’s personal. The ability to continue growing creatively, while working alongside inspiring people like Tim Bradley and Shaw Flick, fills me with a tremendous amount of excitement for what’s ahead. Here’s to tackling whatever comes our way, teaming up to spark fresh ideas, and always chasing that next burst of creativity. Let’s do this.

What if creativity could be the secret ingredient in every job, not just in the studio? While working at Fundamentally Toys, I had the opportunity to assist with digital growth, marketing, and community engagement. One of my favorite moments was creating a mural for a store event, which combined my love of art with connecting to our local community. I soon began creating temporary window murals regularly to promote events, incorporating printed QR codes to link to our social media accounts and website, encouraging passersby to engage with us online. While not every job provides the opportunity for me to create fine art, I’ve found that creative thinking and the observation skills I developed through visual arts education can have a meaningful impact, even in roles that seem more structured, like customer service or office work—whether it’s responding to a customer on the spot or thinking outside the box to resolve a software issue. For fellow creatives, I’m curious: what skills do you bring to jobs that may not traditionally be “creative,” but where your unique perspective makes a difference? Let’s connect and share how our creativity has influenced unexpected career paths! #CreativityAtWork #CustomerService #Marketing #CommunityEngagement #CreativeJobs

Ever cringe at your early work? ?? I usually do. But this hiring ad I wrote over 14 years ago? It’s not bad, and it made a real impact. Let’s rewind to 2010, when I had to sell the idea of working in a brand-new industry. The Challenge: Recruit smart, savvy, nerdy college students and recent graduates to work for OrangeSoda, a startup internet marketing company. Write a recruiting message for magazines and billboards in Utah. This particular ad appeared as a one-page in Utah Business. The Deliverable: A short and sweet ego-bait hook with a pop-culture nod that piques interest and implies we’re a cool place to work for our target demo. Remember, this was 2010. Fun, energetic, “cool workplace” culture hadn’t permeated the market yet, and internet marketing was a new concept. (For context, Facebook Business Profiles and Google Maps navigation launched while I was at this company!) The Outcome: As a result of this ad campaign, we saw an uptick in brand recognition around Utah, as well as an increase in qualified applicants who fit our culture and hiring criteria. Would I write this ad now? No, it wouldn’t work in the same way. But looking back, I’m proud that young Ashley came up with some copy that made a real impact. Do you have accomplishments from your early career that make you proud? I was reminded of this ad's existence while updating my online portfolio, if you're interested in exploring more of my work: https://ashleywalton.com/ #copywriting #career #advertising #traditionaladvertising #magazinead #adcopy

If it wasn’t for my serving experience, I wouldn’t have met an integral person in my life. (Or the co-founder of Third Eye Insights). Back in university, I juggled three jobs to put myself through school. One of those jobs was waiting tables. Whenever customers asked about my career aspirations,?I would say I wanted to become a lawyer. (law was my dream at the time)? they often minimized it in a “that’s cute” kind of way. But one shift, I crossed paths with a woman who offered me a job as her executive assistant. Suddenly, I found myself in boardrooms surrounded by a completely different network. This was where I met Phillip. I told him I wanted to be a lawyer and asked if I could intern at his law firm over the summer. He said yes, and I ended up staying after the summer as his receptionist.? (Which to be honest, wasn’t a job that I loved). So, I took a computer science course and taught myself photoshop. Before I knew it, I was creating social media graphics and designing a new logo for Phillip's firm. He asked me why my career aspiration wasn’t focused on getting into branding and marketing. He saw something in me that I hadn't fully recognized myself. So, I made the move and landed a job as the Marketing Director for a Medical Marijuana company. Eventually, Phillip and I decided to combine our passion for strategic brand storytelling. And that’s when Third Eye Insights was born. ?? PS Is there someone who unexpectedly changed the course of your life? Share your story in the comments.?

Occasionally people DM me and ask about my journey into branding and comms, and how to build a strong personal brand in tech. And I'm SO GLAD YOU ASK... My passion for storytelling and understanding the essence of brands led me out of TV news and into various marketing and communications roles. These experiences helped me hone my skills and learn how to convey a brand's message effectively. Joining Compt was a natural transition for me. I was drawn to our mission of creating more human workplaces through lifestyle benefits. Embracing Compt’s culture and aligning my personal values with our vision has been key in authentically communicating our brand message. ?? Tips for Building a Strong Personal Brand in Tech: 1?? Be Authentic: Showcase your unique perspective and be genuine in your interactions. Authenticity builds trust and helps you stand out. 2?? Consistent Messaging: Ensure your online presence consistently reflects your personal brand, from your LinkedIn profile to your actual posts. (and across social) 3?? Engage with Your Audience: Actively participate in discussions and share valuable insights to establish your expertise and build connections. Don't just copy and paste AI-generated paragraphs of thoughtless garbage. This isn't an AP US History class DBQ (iykyk), and there's no word count to hit. Chill. 4?? Continuous Learning: Stay updated with the latest trends in the tech industry to keep your brand relevant and innovative. 5?? Network Strategically: Connect with like-minded professionals to open new opportunities and gain support throughout your career. DMs always open ??
