Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global crisis that threatens our ability to treat infections, transforming routine treatments into life-threatening challenges. By 2050, AMR could claim 10 million lives annually, surpassing cancer and other major diseases. While we cannot fully stop its progression, we can delay its devastating effects through the responsible use of antibiotics. I was honored to take the initiative and serve as the lead organizer for World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2024 (WAAW) activities at Dr. Akbar Niazi Teaching Hospital - ANTH. Our campaign, themed "??????????????. ????????????????. ?????? ??????," sought to raise awareness and inspire actionable change in the fight against AMR. It was truly inspiring to see healthcare professionals, students, and patients come together for an awareness walk, uniting in a collective call to action. Through initiatives like the awareness walk, educational outreach, and advocacy, we aimed to: ?Empower healthcare professionals and the public to use antibiotics responsibly. ?Raise awareness about the dire consequences of AMR. ?Inspire global action to preserve the future of medicine. ??Antimicrobial stewardship is not just a healthcare strategy; it’s a global responsibility. AMR arises when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist the drugs we use to treat them, making infections harder—and sometimes impossible—to cure. ?? Why should we care? Overuse and misuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents have accelerated this phenomenon, leading to nearly 5 million deaths each year. If we don’t act now, by 2050, AMR could cause more deaths annually than cancer. It’s a problem that requires innovation, collaboration, and a global response. ?? That's why we want to highlight some of our brilliant startups, who are at the forefront of facing this immense challenge: Zonova is pioneering new technology to address microbe growth on the surfaces of medical devices. ??
