Week SIX of my Skillbridge Fellowship at Lockheed Martin through Hiring Our Heroes completed! The time is FLYING but not a single minute of it is wasted. This past week I really put my nose to the grindstone, building a foundation for an incredible project with the goal of assisting new employees utilizing the effectiveness of mentorship. In addition, the needle moved a bit more on a very ambitious project that isn’t quite ready for announcement BUT when it does happen (and I really believe it will), I’ll take a victory lap on this platform. Lastly, we launched our second round of the pilot virtual workshop where meaningful advice and information was shared between knowledgeable and experienced Lockheed employees to those in our military communities (active duty, veterans, spouses, dependents, and caregivers). On a more personal side, it is stunning to think I’m halfway through my Fellowship. I’m asked pretty frequently if my Skillbridge is going to get me a job and that’s a tough one to answer. First and foremost, no, my Skillbridge by itself is NOT going to get me a job. It’s important to understand that a Skillbridge is just that, meant to bridge the gap between my military skills and experiences and that of the non-military (ie, “civilian”) workplace. To that end, my Skillbridge has been value added on a daily basis! But that doesn’t “get me a job”. What it DOES give is the best tools to enhance my brand and the things which make me marketable! It DOES allow me the access and experiences to a new, exciting business cultures and ways of getting things accomplished! Those are the ways that Skillbridge is going to help me “get a job”. And not just a “job”. A meaningful, fulfilling, career in a space that energizes and motivates me… where I can add value, create meaningful change, and continue investing in others so they can one day do the same. Have a great weekend!! ?#militarytransition #militarycommunity #skillbridge Corrine Jamie Eric Ray Samantha Allison Carlos Jordan Beth

Northrop Grumman just announced they lost over a BILLION dollars on the B21 project. And it was a brilliant move. ?? Okay, they intended to lose less, but ultimately, they're securing decades of business with values likely in the hundreds of billions of dollars. ???? This exemplifies the 'loss leader' concept, where initial losses pave the way for lucrative future deals, applicable across various management and business scenarios. Limiting yourself to deals with immediate profit potential means missing out on numerous opportunities. ?? This lesson extends to non-monetary negotiations as well. Sometimes, accepting a management loss within your team or organization can strategically position you for multiple advantageous moves in the future. ?? Want to be an A player? Learn to play chess not checkers! ?? #NorthropGrumman #B21Project #BusinessStrategy #LeadershipLessons #LossLeader #OpportunityKnocks #StrategicMoves #ChessNotCheckers #ManagementInsights #APlayerMindset Photo Credit: Northrop Grumman

The irony here is that these types of transition assistance programs should have a positive effect on retention in the long term. 1) Military personnel have a chance to learn about the harsh realities that come with leaving the security of the military.?They often return to the mission feeling better about their choices. 2) These types of programs help the federal government fulfill its promises to veterans which is where the idea originated in the first place, to mitigate issues with veteran homelessness and unemployability.?Just as important as that, it in turn makes less disgruntled veterans who then support the future of our fighting forces.?I recently read more veterans than ever before are actually discouraging youth from joining because of unfulfilled promises.?Historically, the military has always been a way for the best of society to change their station.?Why should we reduce such a strong incentive? Not to mention the simple truth this poster alluded to: supportive leaders inspire more followers.? I hope we don’t see this type of knee-jerk reaction in other branches.?
I hate this mindset. I bet senior leadership got together and did a SWOT and this came up as a “threat”. A threat to readiness is a developed transition program that helps service members obtain careers and allows employers to better access our veterans. ??♂? What the individual service member and potential recruit sees - Your potential success after service is not a DOD priority.

In 2023, idgroup began using Heroic Public Benefit Corporation's training platform as a tool to reinforce our values of reciprocal responsibility, solutions-focused, appreciative worldview, continuous learning and curiosity, excellence and collaboration. Each month, a Heroic philosopher note/lesson is selected that ties back to one of our values. Throughout August, we are elevating our value of reciprocal responsibility. The philosopher's note that was selected dives deep into the book Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin. The biggest takeaway from Extreme Ownership is absolutely owning everything in your world. Take 100% responsibility for the success (and failure) of your missions—blame no one and constantly seek ways to improve. So what does reciprocal responsibility look like for idgroup? It means doing what you say you are going to do. Our team members act as interdependent partners where the success of each individual is tied to personal responsibility for our attitudes and actions as well as the support, respect and love we give to each other. This attitude extends to our interactions beyond the walls of this organization–to all living things. How are you taking extreme ownership? Are you helping find solutions, making things better, leading and winning each and every day??

The transformation of a veteran is a unique story… We come from many different paths and converge at our basic military training courses. We’re grown into effective players in the game of defense often seeing the world at a young age and exposed to high risk, low reward, situations. We learn how to time manage, task manage, and communicate. We become SMEs in our fields. We transition into managerial or supervisory roles, becoming leaders of people, processes, assets, and missions. We eventually become the senior leaders in the room, guiding our teams locally and remotely, pushing for better outcomes and policies. We lead from the front… And then… It all stops! And that is ok, as we transition into our new identities. We will always carry the training and the experiences that the military gave us while we transition back to the civilian world. Its seems almost alien when you first get out. You may feel awkward. You may feel out of sync with the world. You may not know what your next step is. But this feeling is transient! You WILL become an effective player in your new world. You WILL find success! You WILL find the beat of your own drum! Do not be scared to step out of your comfort zone. It can be very rewarding. Having a team of mentors in your corner can be extremely valuable. The transformation from Airman to SNCO to Civilian was definitely a sureal experience that I treasure. I will always look back on my past service fondly, but now is the time to #Moveforward . What does that look like for you? Do you have a mentor? Are you attending networking events and engaging with entities like 50strong, VETS2INDUSTRY, and MilCruit Are you attending information sessions of future employers, like Verizon, John Deere, Wells Fargo, Fiserv, UnitedHealth Group, TEKsystems, and Johnson & Johnson to name a few? There are many others…too many to list. If not, then maybe now is a good time to start. Even if you are 2 years out from retirement or separation. Lets get moving on creating the next chapter of your unique #story, today. #VTeamLife #Iamvz #Vteam #Networklife #veteran #veterans #story #journey
