Technician Spotlight: Phil O. Lead Diesel Technician- Caledonia, WI I started my journey by building hot rods with my buddy in the garage. What began as a fun hobby led me to pursue my passion at UTI, where I earned my Automotive and Diesel degree. After spending years in the automotive world, I found my way into a Kenworth shop and have been working in the diesel industry ever since. What I love about working at Mater Fleet is the culture of teamwork. It's inspiring to see upper management, from our Tractor Manager to the President, rolling up their sleeves and getting involved directly in the work—whether it's under the trucks or moving parts. To new employees: Be patient. Our work involves a learning curve because we’re not brand-specific. We work on all makes and models, and that variety can be challenging but rewarding. Looking ahead, my goal is to lead a shop or department within this industry in the next five years. The smell of the steel train tracks and the oak sleepers and the smell of the station. It was Brough station. I’d just been for my interview for my first job as an apprentice aircraft engineer. I knew I’d get the job because I knew more about aircraft than the interviewer did. I’d been flying model planes since I was five years old. The first year was great. Three months in the drawing office, couple of months on machine work, couple of months on some electrical & sheet metal work and then into the factory. Week one was good. We got to make a Harrier central fuselage. At the end of that week I said ‘what do we do next week?’ The guy I was working with said “we do the same again.” About halfway through that second week I thought f**k that and I went off to the office and said I want to be moved and then got moved onto the Phantom reconnaissance pod for a week. Then I got moved on again because I complained. I went on to make a hatch for the Harrier. I I got paid extra for that couple of weeks ‘cos there was a bonus scheme. I later I realised this wasn’t the job for me so I left. I had 20 odd jobs in the next two years and 40 years later I realised I had ADHD. Sales was the only job I was cut out for. How does a mechanic turn out to be a Fractional Operations Manager? Yes, you read that right a mechanic. My first job out of high school was as a mechanic. I was the only female mechanic in my year at TAFE, I had to work twice as hard as the gents. But I was also one of the luckiest. Lucky because It took me 50 interviews and rejections before I found a great boss willing to give a girl a go. While the others knocked me back because of it. This gave me insane resilience. What did I learn? I learnt to ask a lot of questions and why was this important? Because working on cars you need to be great at asking questions to find the issue people are having with their cars to diagnose the fault. The car making some noise wasn’t enough to distinguish where to look. You needed specifics where when how long, hot cold etc This was one thing I excelled at diagnostics. Problem-solving and putting puzzles together was my favourite part of being a mechanic. This is where I started to develop my skills of asking the right questions. It's why I ask so many today. Each question shows me another puzzle piece. This career led me into different industries and I often became the fixer wherever I went. The original plan was to use my trade to join the fire brigade. It didn’t quite pan out that way Instead, I became a corporate firefighter. When shit broke or was on fire I was one of the ones to run towards it and fix it. So now as a Fractional Operations Manager I hold the hose and put out those fires, find where they started, ask the right questions and fix the issue that caused it in the first place. This is why Businesses work with me. I don’t just put out the spot fires for the owner, I fix the cause. Then keep it all running smoothly while helping you grow.
