#GnarlyTree managing principal Stephanie Hayes Richards [she/her/hers] represented our USDA Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities team from Smart Ag Puerto Rico last week at the World Specialty Coffee Expo in Chicago. It was a fantastic event during which we gained a better understanding of sustainable coffee programs in other countries, the Specialty Coffee Association standard, and communicating product value. We look forward to using all we learned last week to help coffee and cacao farmers in Puerto Rico design a locally-led voluntary sustainable agriculture program, implement climate-smart agricultural practices, document and communicate project benefits, and expand markets for Puerto Rican products in the global marketplace. https://lnkd.in/gvm2u8WY

The food sector is one of the biggest contributors to the #climate and #naturecrises. The way we grow, distribute, consume and dispose of #food is responsible for one third of total #greenhousegasemissions annually. Food systems are the biggest contributor to galloping #biodiversityloss, opens new tab, and account for 70% of #freshwater withdrawals. With half of #foodsystememissions , opens new tabdown to agricultural production and land-use change in corporate value chains, food brands have an outsized role in food system transformation. Institutional investors such as Federated Hermes are pushing companies in the land and #agriculture sector to adopt more #regenerativeagriculture practices as part of their #netzero commitments, guided by the Science Based Targets initiative, which last year issued its guidance, opens new tab for companies in the sector.

Check out the article I wrote for Food Dive: Bridging the divide between food companies’ wants and farmers’ needs! https://lnkd.in/d-qQGUUg Food and beverage companies are embracing ambitious net-zero goals, reflecting a broader global commitment to environmental responsibility. However, a significant hurdle lies in the misalignment between the industry's sustainability aspirations and the entrenched traditional farming practices of agricultural suppliers. This disconnect poses a challenge as farmers face the task of adopting new, sustainable practices that may not guarantee equivalent crop yields or revenue. The resistance to change is not just technical; it strikes at the core of economic and psychological stability, as these farming methods symbolize a connection to heritage and community pride. Bridging this gap requires a nuanced approach that respects and integrates traditional practices, acknowledging the socio-cultural significance they hold for farmers. Successful sustainability transitions must not only focus on environmental benefits but also consider the economic and cultural dimensions, ensuring a harmonious evolution towards more sustainable agriculture. #sustainability #cropsupply #farmers #foodsupplychain #changemanagement

The Sustainability Consortium has a valued partnership with Trust In Food? to reach farmers and provide their critical perspectives to those downstream in the supply chain. This is our third co-authored report, this one focusing on feed and pork supplier perspectives on data collection and sharing. We recently announced this report together at the Trust in Food Symposium in Kansas City. A few highlights 1) Most farmers do not share farm data with their buyers (because it is not requested). For example: Although 71% of row crop (feed) farmers report collecting soil test data—a key indicator of soil health—only 10% share that data with their crop buyers because it is not requested. 2) Farmers collect data and are willing to share it under the right conditions. Those conditions include: o??Data Use: 49% of hog farmers and 38% of row crop farmers would be willing to share their data but request clarification on the intended use. o??Market Opportunities: Most farmers will consider sharing their farm data as a condition of market access, price premiums, or a pay-for-performance bonus. o? Compensation: Most farmers (86%) believe they should be compensated for sharing their farm’s data including both their effort and the value of the data collected. These insights can help those working across the supply chain to address the needs of growers and the signal gaps that exist between the corporate need for sustainability data and the farm. Thanks to?Amy Skoczlas Cole Erin Gertrude Killeen Teresa Garcia-Moore Cara Urban Judith Rockvam for all you hard work to bring these insights to light!
Amid the new focus on regenerative practices in U.S. agriculture and the unprecedented investments in climate-smart commodities, Farm Journal’s?Trust In Food??and? The Sustainability Consortium (TSC)?are partnering to gather insights into the vital role that data collection and sharing plays in measuring sustainability in the pork supply chain.? "The study reveals that data is the key to unlocking climate-smart economic opportunities for U.S. producers,” said Christy Slay, CEO of The Sustainability Consortium. “Understanding the barriers and potential solutions in this process is essential for paving the way for more effective data sharing among farmers, creating a foundation for sustainable agriculture practices and positive change within the industry.” Click the link below to access the report: https://lnkd.in/gf9e6iVy

New Research Highlights Smallholder Coffee Farmers' Climate-Friendly Contributions ?? A recent study from The Fairtrade Foundation reveals that smallholder coffee farmers in Latin America use more climate-friendly practices compared to large-scale plantations. Smallholders often employ shaded agroforestry systems, which not only contribute to biodiversity and carbon sequestration but also enhance food security and climate resilience. We’re proud to share that V. Ernesto Méndez, a longtime advisor to Food 4 Farmers, contributed to this important research. His expertise in agroecological approaches continues to shape our work, helping farmers diversify their crops and adopt sustainable practices that support their communities and the environment. At Food 4 Farmers, we see firsthand how small-scale coffee farmers are leading the way in climate-friendly agriculture every day. By working hand-in-hand with farmers and their families, we’re growing a healthier future for coffee and the communities it comes from.

?? Healthy soils are a vital part of a sustainable future for agriculture in the EU?? At ECOFI, we were delighted to see the importance placed on soil health and land management in the recently published report from the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture. Organic-based fertilisers provide farmers with circular solutions that improve soil health as well as enhancing their agricultural and economic productivity. However, gaps in the EU’s Fertilising Products Regulation are limiting these products' access to the European market. The EU must act to ensure policy coherence and market access for circular organic-based fertilisers to help strengthen soil health and food security. ?? Empowering farmers with the skills and knowledge to integrate organic-based fertilisers into nutrient management plans is also crucial to unlocking these products' full potential for the competitiveness and sustainability of the EU agricultural sector. ?? Learn more about the benefits of organic-based fertilisers and organic soil improvers and how the EU can support the industry here: https://lnkd.in/eg6vwWE5
