Fed up with an overgrown, unusable space on their school site, Blackrod Primary School are using the Green Spaces Fund to turn it into a community garden for children, families, and community members ?? They'll be growing food, teaching about wildlife and healthy food production, and introducing a composting system to enhance soil health and reduce waste. The school hope that their Green Spaces Fund project will foster a closer-knit, healthier community whilst providing accessible green space in Bolton. Lancashire Wildlife Trust

Wishing you a buzzing National Urban Beekeeping Day! This celebration, originally promoted by the Detroit Hives organization in 2019, encourages community members in cities to practice apiculture as a way to help support primary pollinator species in urban environments where natural systems have historically been displaced, disrupted, or degraded. Along with the ecological functions, beekeeping also provides a range of other potential benefits to local communities. https://beesinthed.com/ (While some critics have cautioned that 'domesticated' apiculture adversely impacts wild bee species, carefully planned and managed urban beekeeping where wild bee colonies are not viable can help mitigate potential adverse impacts.)

We have drawn up plans with Worthing’s community of independent commercial fishermen to transform the town’s unutilised rotunda into a new facility where they can prepare and sell their fresh fish. ?? Since the rotunda at Windsor Lawns was boarded up in 2021 following a spate of antisocial behaviour, we have been in talks with Worthing Fishermen’s Society to create a dedicated facility for its members. After years of planning, the project can be brought to life after securing external funding from the Marine Management Organisation, a public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which is creating a prosperous future for seas, coasts and communities. Thanks to additional funding from our Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Neighbourhood Fund, Sussex Bay? and the marine conservation charity Sea-Changers, the facility can now be repurposed to host a cold storage facility, community notice board, ice making machine and sales area. The plan, which was approved by Worthing’s planning committee in October, will present an opportunity to revive the town’s once-thriving fishing scene. Today, there are only a select group of fishermen on its shingle shore keeping the culture and businesses alive in the town. Work on transforming the rotunda is getting underway from Monday 20th January, with the facility due to be complete in Spring 2025.

Today is World Environment Day, and the 2024 theme is restoring land, halting desertification and building drought resilience. Using the UNEP's practical guide, we've pulled together three activities that you can use to get your students involved, beyond #WorldEnvironmentDay ?? Find or create a community garden, that your students can use to learn about where their food comes from. Optional extra: get your school canteen or cafe involved using food from the garden and promoting it with students! ?? Why not take your younger students on a tree planting day with a charity near you? Teach them about which trees are local to your school, and how healthy soil helps the environment. ?? Run a session on rivers and waterways and examine maps to see how water near you has changed over time. Cover water-based animal habitats, and teach your students how to look after them. Any more tips? Drop them in the comments! And why not take a look at the UNEP's practical guide for more information ?? https://ow.ly/8ral50S6ZW0

Rural and Indigenous communities many times have employees that wear many hats. They do not have the ability to hire extra personnel to assist with grant writing, do the additional work needed to build resilience against future disasters, or have the additional matching funds that some grants require. Philanthropy organizations can help fill this crucial gap needed for these communities be prepared for disasters.
Unfortunately, this is not a new conversation, but excited to be part of an organization working to change this paradigm! Always proud of the work Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC) is doing to build vibrant, healthy, and thriving rural and Indigenous communities throughout the west. #RuralMatters
