It’s back-to-school season. But for too many children, there’s no guarantee they’ll get much of an education at all. Why? Because not one state in this country is doing enough to make sure homeschooled children are receiving an education. Across the country, too many homeschooled children aren't being taught core school subjects, can't take advantage of their local school district's resources or activities, have unqualified teachers, or don't get their academic progress assessed. At CRHE, we're committed to changing that. We created the Make Homeschool Safe Act to protect homeschooled children's right to learn, and we're doing everything we can to get this landmark model legislation in front of leaders who can help bring it to life state by state. But we can't do this vital work without you. As the 2024-2025 school year starts, we’re asking you to give $25 to spread the word about the Make Homeschool Safe Act. Every dollar helps our small team stand up for homeschooled children's right to learn. Give today:

We are thrilled to announce that HopeAustin has been selected as a finalist for the Central Texas Community Foundation Impact Award! To vote or see all the remarkable stories of our Legacy Luncheon finalists, click here: https://lnkd.in/ghdCG6yj HopeAustin creates opportunities for the youngest members of our community through food security. By providing weekend meals to students who lose their subsidized meals offered during the school week, HopeAustin ensures the brightest future for our children and the broader community by ensuring children have every opportunity to learn and thrive without hunger. HopeAustin provides meals for 95 schools, 4600 students per week and over 110,000 meals per month in Central Texas! Research shows that children who suffer from food insecurity are more likely to have lower math scores and repeat a grade, among other challenges in areas like language, motor skills, and behavior. Children need nutrients so they can grow, develop, and focus on learning instead of thinking about the food they need. Where children face food insecurity in Austin and the surrounding area, HopeAustin steps in to end childhood hunger one child and one meal at a time, ensuring our kids at risk of hunger are equipped to reach their full potential. We are proud of the progress made on our Manifesto aims. We have raised concerns with the Department for Education about reports that local authority High Needs Block funding isn’t reaching the early years in some areas. In light of the importance of early intervention to improve long term outcomes for children, the DfE sent guidance in April 2024 on early years spending expectations. More must be done to ensure that the funding is directed to children in the early years, and we will continue to explore whether ring-fencing of the High Needs Block is possible to ensure critical early intervention can take place. https://buff.ly/3ufGRlH

Each of us upholds or dismantles power systems every day, like when we choose where to put our hard-earned money on #givingtuesday. In a healthy democratic system, system-level power emerges from community empowerment. On the other hand, systemic disinvestment damages the connection between community and governance, and threatens the individual's ability to survive and thrive. You know the importance of teaching youth to recognize systemic power. The crucial next step is to invite youth to respectfully interrogate and collaborate with the system that will soon be theirs. I can think of no better organization that increases our capacity for community engagement than The Global Academy for Community-Based Education. #GACBE supports students in addressing systemic challenges in their own community, teaching how to ask questions of shareholders outside the classroom, and looking for feasible community-driven solutions. It's the ultimate inquiry-driven project-based holistic learning model. This mode of discourse has the power to transform by creating new perspectives for decision-makers, building connections across sectors, and empowering the youth to envision a role in their community's future. I have the honor of serving on the board of this brand new 501c3. It has established impact and tremendous potential. Because we are a new nonprofit, your help can make a tremendous difference, whatever the amount. Please donate at?https://lnkd.in/eCnWDubs. To learn more, visit?www.CBEglobal.org. ??? What Will You Do When the Foundation Crumbles? We’ve built our society on a foundation that’s starting to crack. ?? The foundation of education is weakening, and with it, so is our collective potential. ??? The warning signs are clear: if we don’t rebuild now, we risk a future where our children lack the skills to navigate a world that is constantly changing. ?? The question isn’t if the foundation will crumble... ... the question is: What will YOU do when it does? ?????

Here’s what high school juniors and seniors should consider as they begin preparing for college.
Parenting a high school senior is not for the faint of heart. Great interview this morning with Barry University's Provost Dr. Pablo Ortiz on the areas parents and students need to consider including the SAT going completely digital - no more scantrons?!?! #PublicRelations #NonProfitPublicRelations #EducationPublicRelations https://lnkd.in/dShRjuPQ

Would you believe that some states are blocking access to funds to feed hungry children? Every week in my clinic I take care of families that are struggling to put enough food on the table. A new federal program is looking to help with that. Check out our newest episode of KIDS TODAY where we talk all about the program, what states are rolling it out, and about how you (or someone you know) can get enrolled! https://lnkd.in/gpXF-vDU

With forward thinking leaders, anything is possible! - Pinpoint an area of concern. - Research how others have effectively addressed the concern. - Involve the community to create an actionable mission plan. - Apply for grants that align with the plan. - Use the funds as agreed upon. These steps involve action research and community outreach. I will preach day in and day out about the necessity of buy-in within the community. Everyone’s voice needs a microphone to ensure an equitable, actionable, solution-oriented outcome leads to success!
In Michigan, a grant helped to launch a new afterschool and summer learning program for FREE in a community where 80% of youth qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. How has funding helped YOUR program #EngageEveryStudent? https://lnkd.in/eDCs5ikz

All colleges receiving federal funding should be required to provide adequate basic needs services and those services should receive government funding. Period. Please join me in the fight to make it happen. Why? It’s Thursday. Here’s what my students experienced just THIS WEEK: (1) A mom with a 10 year old found herself homeless after the sudden death of her fiancé. (2) A mom with a toddler who is also caring for her grandparent witnessed the murder of her brother. (3) A dad with a 15 year old experienced the stillborn birth of his second child. All 3 students are in programs focused on high-demand, high-wage credentials. I’ve got 5 other students who are struggling with rent, 4 who can’t find jobs, and 3 others dealing with significant illnesses. Teaching in today’s world requires empathy and compassion- and also *services.* I’m grateful that in every case I’ve been able to make a substantive referral for support at Community College of Philadelphia. At the same time, I know those services are understaffed and underfunded. And that’s by design. We are doing far more with far less, with students who will experience the greatest ROI if only they reach the finish line. Invest in #communitycolleges. Invest in #basicneeds supports. Take #RealCollege students and their lives seriously. Our futures depend on theirs- and their futures depend on our decisions. Start by having your organization sign on to this coalition letter calling on the Biden-Harris Administration to take a series of actions to improve SNAP access and enrollment, and take steps to address campus hunger.?? https://lnkd.in/efnN9Bfd
