It’s Time (now than later) to Shift Power Have you ever thought about what it truly means to put equity at the center of global development? #Throwback to the 2022 International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP), one of the most thought-provoking sessions, “It’s Time to Shift Power” (see link below), explored this critical topic. The session focused on the need to dismantle outdated structures of inequality, empower local leadership, and ensure that communities are at the forefront of decision-making processes in family planning and beyond. Some key takeaways were: ? Equity isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a necessity for sustainable development. ? Shifting power means trusting and investing in local leaders and organizations. ? Global solutions must prioritize the voices of those most affected. This conversation reminded me that meaningful change happens when power is shared, voices are heard, and actions align with commitments to justice and inclusion. Social philosopher Roman Krznaric poses the question “how can we become good ancestors?” in the newly released Signals Spotlight Report, prepared by the Futures and Strategy Team of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This 2024 report tracks areas of change around the globe, and identifies three areas of opportunities for development in the pursuance of intergenerational equity: 1. Hope for an equitable future 2. Hope for responsible technological processes 3. Hope for resilient and connected communities The report is designed to act as a conversation starter, to inspire questions and dialogue on what choices we can make to preserve and protect this planet, one whose survival the generations of people who will come after us are dependent on. We at the GEG Project at Northeastern University drive this type of thinking, by connecting intergenerational leaders in environment and development to facilitate dialogue and establish connections between like-minded individuals within the multilateral system.
