Insightful reflection from my colleagues on the Second World Conference on Statelessness organised by the phenomenal Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion, Nationality for All, DHRRA MALAYSIA and Family Frontiers. Some 15 million people worldwide are stateless - yet until just a decade ago, the field of actors working to solve statelessness and help stateless people are sparse. And stateless communities and their leaders were very much at the periphery, not meaningfully involved in setting the agenda, poorly resourced, and far from sites of power. The Conference was a good starting point to raise awareness on a human rights issue previously pushed to the sidelines in the funder community. Philanthropy needs to seize this momentum and consolidate their efforts in funding stateless support groups and movements, as well as meaningfully involve people affected by statelessness in relevant decision-making. https://lnkd.in/eDKcgHDZ

?? This excellent announcement comes at a key point, when communities, governments and philanthropy need to be collaborating effectively to have true and long-lasting impact in our societies. We welcome the launch of Partnerships for Local Action and Community Empowerment (PLACE), as a new centre for learning and development of place-based change in Australia and look forward to following it's achievements closely. "The establishment of PLACE reflects a commitment to working differently, listening to what works locally and working in close collaboration with communities, philanthropy, and across governments to support accelerate positive change in local communities." https://bit.ly/3UA4v6x
We are thrilled this is now a reality! The announcement about PLACE has?been a long time in the making and comes from visionary and persistent leadership from communities and collaborators across Australia. A big shout out to everyone who helped shape the idea of a national centre for place-based collaboration into PLACE over many years. The experience and expertise of people who engaged in the design of PLACE through our work as the Foundation Partner has been instrumental in reaching this commitment from government and philanthropy. The work for equity and justice is big and long-term work. Whether it be in communities, regions and nationally – we need thriving ecosystems of people working together for this. PLACE has an important role in the national ecosystem to strengthen and grow place-based work across the country. This is an exciting investment for the country and evidence of what is possible through the growing movement for collaborative systems change in Australia. ?? The Power of Choice ?? I recently came across World Vision Canada's #Chosen initiative, and it stopped me in my tracks. At its core, this program flips the traditional script: instead of sponsors choosing a child, it’s the child who gets to choose their sponsor. ???? This simple yet profound shift resonates deeply with me. ? It’s a powerful reminder that choice = empowerment. ?? It’s about giving someone a voice, agency, and dignity—things we often take for granted. My wife, Kasi McGurk, and I are proud sponsors of a child called Rose, and the experience has been truly humbling. ?? Receiving photo's of Rose, talking to our children of the impact we are providing to Rose's life was an emotional moment we’ll never forget. It’s a small way to give back, but it carries such a big impact. ?? This initiative is even more special to us because my father-in-law, Rocky Dundas, MBA serves as the VP of Philanthropy, Engagement, and Partnerships at World Vision. ?? His dedication to creating meaningful change has inspired us in so many ways, and this program is a perfect example of that mission in action. ?? World Vision’s Chosen reminds us that even the smallest changes in perspective can make a lasting difference. By allowing children to take the lead, they’re not just receiving support—they’re being seen, heard, and valued. ?? How has the power of choice shaped your life or the way you uplift others? Let’s start a conversation in the comments! ?? #Empowerment #ThePowerOfChoice #WorldVision #Chosen #GivingBack #SmallChangesBigImpact

When I started my entrepreneurial journey with Sparkll four years ago, I wanted my work not only to help businesses move forward but also to dedicate some of my time to giving back to society. Through?De Nieuwe Gevers, I have carried out wonderful HR-related projects for small organizations that truly make a difference. It’s a beautiful exchange: my expertise helps them progress, while the passion and dedication of these remarkable initiatives inspire me. Since this summer, I have also been volunteering with the?Red Cross (Rode Kruis Nederland). There, I provide communication training as part of a first aid program specifically for vulnerable women. It’s truly special to see how I can apply my years of experience in this new context while at the same time learning so much from these women. Last month, I completed my first program with a group of women from all over the world (Morocco, Turkey, Suriname, the Philippines, and Iraq). At the closing ceremony and diploma presentation, everyone brought something delicious to share. To thank these women for their heartwarming energy and beautiful stories, I baked this traditional Dutch apple pie. This kind of volunteer work with the?Red Cross?and through?De Nieuwe Gevers?brings me great fulfillment and inspires me in my daily work as an entrepreneur. It builds on my passion for organizational development and personal growth, and it shows me how we can truly make a difference together by learning from and with each other—especially in a time when connection and reaching out to one another are more important than ever. Are you also working on creating social impact, or curious about how to combine it with your work? I’d love to share my experiences! #SocialImpact #Volunteering #Inclusivity #PurposefulEntrepreneurship #StrongerTogether

International Volunteer Day – A Day to Celebrate Changemakers! ??? Today, we celebrate International Volunteer Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of volunteers worldwide. This day highlights how the collective efforts of individuals can achieve what even the most talented organizations or individuals alone cannot. Volunteers bring together passion, dedication, and teamwork to tackle challenges, uplift communities, and create a ripple effect of positive change. Their selfless acts often bridge gaps that neither governments nor private organizations can fill. ?? Why Should You Volunteer? ? It’s a powerful way to address societal gaps and empower those in need. ? It fosters collaboration and innovation by uniting diverse talents for a common cause. ? The satisfaction of making an impact goes beyond any personal achievement. ?? How You Can Get Involved: Start small. Offer your time, knowledge, or resources to causes that matter to you. Together, we can create something extraordinary. Tell us in the comments: What’s one cause you’re passionate about? Let’s spark a conversation that inspires action. #InternationalVolunteerDay #VolunteerForChange #Changemakers #CommunityEmpowerment #GlobalImpact #GivingBack #VolunteerSpirit #SocialGood #BeTheChange #TogetherWeCan #VolunteerWork #InspiringAction #EvisionTechnoserve

Philanthropic funders do what they do because in the main they want people's lives to be better, and they want the resources they have to go towards building or repairing the foundations for everyone to live good lives. One question on many people's mind who have funds to give (a little or a lot - it all counts), is what can they do to help people in New Zealand come together in our communities? To help people see that we have more in common than we think, and overcome the division that is being used by some groups and people? Division that we know saddens many people. Well done to Lani Evans MNZM and Te Raukura O'Connell Rapira for listening to all the people and groups they did, for helping lift our gaze to te tiriti/the treaty as tool for social cohesion. For offering this collective wisdom and knowledge to people looking to fund activities that work to build more connected, caring communities where everyone's contribution is recognised and encouraged. At The Workshop we endorse all the actions suggested, and note the strong focus on the importance of narratives and framing as a solution that works. Do read the report.
An experienced for-purpose founder, leader and director focused on philanthropy, equity, community and moving resources more effectively to where they're needed most.
Earlier this year, Te Raukura O'Connell Rapira and I?were commissioned to research and write a report for a group of funders, exploring social cohesion in Aotearoa and philanthropy’s role in strengthening it. At its heart, social cohesion is about our ability to live well together. It encompasses ideas of trust and belonging, civic action, participation and policies that ensure social and economic inclusion. It is the glue that holds us together, despite our differences, allowing us to weather storms collectively. And right now it feels like there are storms aplenty. Woven Together brings together insights from literature, media, and interviews with 80 experts to gain an understanding of what we need to do, and be, and understand to strengthen social cohesion in Aotearoa. What we found, in the words of Te Raukura was that “if we’re serious about achieving a socially cohesive society then we have to become a society that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi."? It seems appropriate then, that the report is released today, as I sit in wānanga on Kairau Marae, amidst a group of philanthropists discussing Te Tiriti, Māori aspirations and our own complex histories and migration stories. Huge thanks to everyone who participated in this mahi.
