The assertion that #animations or #comics are only for children or teenagers makes no sense! The values/messages portrayed in superhero stories are often highly educational and worth watching/ reading. They offer a chance at escapism. A patient’s life can be stressful at times, or it can be boring, or generally unpleasant, and therefore escapism is important once in a while.Consistent visual cues that make up the language of animated stories help train the brain to recognize when and how to utilize those empathy pathways, and not only may they help boost memory, but they may also be a far more effective teaching tools than the long-established textbook . 2023 was a year of significant achievements at The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ. We launched the ‘State of Eye Health in the Pacific’ research programme, providing crucial evidence for Pacific eye health leaders to strengthen their health systems. We also signed a multi-year partnership agreement with the Government of Samoa and extended our partnerships with the Governments of Tonga and Fiji. All of these are important steps towards advancing the Pacific’s vision of universal access to quality eye care. And of course, working with our Pacific partners, and with your support, we achieved some outstanding outcomes on the ground including: ?? 81,839 patient consultations ??? 5,792 surgeries ?????? 23 eye specialist doctors and nurses graduated ?? 132 outreaches held across seven countries Each consultation, surgery, graduate, and outreach has a lasting impact, improving the livelihoods and well-being of our Pacific neighbours. A legislative change triggered by the advocacy of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) was passed and enacted in Western Australia (WA) earlier this month further strengthening patient safety for Australians. The change, part of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Application Act 2024, protects the title ‘surgeon’, something RACS had been calling for for over a decade. The law means only specialist medical practitioners who have successfully completed surgical training approved by an Australian Medical Council (AMC) accredited college - specialist surgeons, obstetricians and gynaecologists and ophthalmologists - can call themselves ‘surgeon’. RACS President Kerin Fielding said: “Too often patients undergo surgery under the false assumption about the standard of training of the person carrying out the surgery. These changes will help maintain public confidence in the high standards of our health system.” Dr Ming Yew, chair of the RACS Western Australian State Committee, said the legislation empowers patients "to make better informed choices about the education, training and competency of the medical practitioner they entrust their care to.” Read more: https://bit.ly/3UUmFiA #RACS #advocacy #patientsafety #TrustFRACS #WA #titlesurgeon

Luck = preparation + opportunity (+ luck!) I'm not gonna lie, building a career in Extreme Medicine and stepping sideways from the conventional medical treadmill isn't easy. Even when you get there there - finding new opportunities, staying relevant, and keeping your skills sharp - you still find yourself beset with frustration, rejection and many moments of self-doubt. One thing that has always struck me is the power of staying the course. The power of steadfast patience and perseverence. There is no such thing as 'overnight success'. You create your own luck. The foundations for success in any discipline are laid over many years of careful and deliberate graft. Sometimes the hardest part is keeping the faith for long enough for those doors to start opening.
