Back to #PEAK2024seattle with the Building Your Own Board of Directors crew. From a bingo card posted on LinkedIn by Tara Robertson, CPCC, ACC to a PEAK Grantmaking convening workshop, we shared the significance of building a personal board of directors and the methodology for doing so in our session.
Many of us work for companies that have a board of directors. The board is legally mandated to ensure compliance with the organization's by-laws and the government's regulations, remain current, and plan for the future while reflecting on the past. Essentially, the board provides oversight, insight, hindsight, and foresight for the organization. Countless hours are spent compiling research, data, and materials to assist the board in making informed decisions. A robust board is often indicative of a strong organization.
In our workshop, Rachel Kimber, MPA, MS, Marissa Lifshen Steinberger, Adam Liebling, and I brought this concept to the individual level. Why not assemble your own board? A group of individuals committed to your success, offering perspectives and sharing their experiences, resources, and advice to guarantee your success in whatever you present to the board. As the leader of your own enterprise, as a CEO, you deserve a strong, professional board. This means you must:
?? Understand your mission and values.
?? Identify the roles required on your board.
?? Clarify the level of commitment and responsibilities expected of each member.
?? Seek out potential board members.
?? Communicate your desire and convene the board.
Our workshop was only the beginning. We will continue throughout the year, offering additional resources and support for those aspiring to construct their board. Reflecting on the proverb, "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together," establishing your board means you do not have to journey alone. #board #philanthropy
