Have you seen the latest communication by the European Commission on #cleantransition? ?? ?? It takes inventory of the latest so-called Clean Transition Dialogues. After last year's #COP28, the Commission engaged in a series of dialogues with industry partners. The goal: promoting business models for a decarbonised economy. ?? The dialogues covered topics such as hydrogen, clean-tech, critical raw materials, green deal infrastructure, and clean #mobility, one of two case studies for READJUST. ?? ?? And while the industrial sector is key to making a #green transition possible, we must not forget who stands at the centre of any business model: you and me, the European #citizens. With our main stage session at #COP29 underway, we've brought together ministers and senior decision-makers from around the world to discuss how international collaboration can accelerate the deployment of clean technologies across the power, industry, transport, and buildings sectors. Underpinning today's discussion is a new update from Mission Possible Partnership's #GlobalProjectTracker, which monitors the pipeline of green industrial projects across 7 heavy #industry and #transport sectors: https://lnkd.in/e2BcSKPH What we can learn from this new update is that, although the global pipeline of projects is growing, the pace at which announced projects reach Final Investment Decision is far too slow. We only have two years left to see projects fully approved if we want these green plants to be up and running by 2030! It was a pleasure to moderate the panel, "Beyond emissions reductions: affordability, reliability, and competitiveness" as part of McKinsey’s COP29 Green Zone program. Our discussion explored a range of possibilities on what it takes to achieve the energy transition. Here are my three key takeaways: 1. There was clear optimism about us being able to accelerate the transition, based on positive progress witnessed by our panelists. 2. Solving problems together is a must to find solutions that balance reliability, affordability, and competitiveness. For a utility, for instance, this means engaging deeply with both customers and regulators. For investors, this means bringing together private, public, and philanthropic capital in the right mix for each situation. 3. ”What took us here, won’t take us there.” We must accelerate the pace of innovation in technology, business models (risk sharing), financing instruments and regulation to support the unprecedented transition of our physical energy system. Glasgow Breakthrough Agenda - COP 26 Breakthrough Agenda is a global clean technology plan focussing on the five sectors of the global economy responsible for over 50% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The plan includes building a coalition of leading public and private initiatives and sharing information about what will help to promote success. The plan is to significantly reduce emissions by 2020. The five breakthrough goals are:- Power Clean power is the most affordable and reliable option for all countries to meet their power needs efficiently by 2030. Road Transport Zero emission vehicles are the new normal and accessible, affordable, sustainable in all regions by 2030. Steel Near zero emission steel is the preferred choice in global markets, with efficient use and non zero emission steel production established and growing in every region by 2030. Hydrogen Affordable renewable and low carbon hydrogen is globally available by 2030. Agriculture Climate-resilient, sustainable agriculture is the most attractive and widely adopted option for farmers everywhere by 2030. To reduce carbon emissionsin these five areas, the signatories agree to contribute to international collaboration that:- 1. Supports alignment in policies and standards 2. Motivates R&D efforts in environmentally-friendly technology 3. Increases coordination in public investment among the international community 4. Mobilizes private finance to promote these efforts. Each nation can sign on to some or all Breakthrough goals The UK will lead an annual Global Checkpoint Process to track and review progress towards rapid transition. These goals include a set of metrics that countries will use as measures to report progress on reaching the commitments India made an announcement of new climate action targets at the COP-26 summit in Glasgow. This included: Installing non-fossil fuel electricity capacity of 500 GW by 2030 Sourcing 50% of energy requirement from renewables by 2030 Reducing 1 billion tonnes of projected emissions from now till 2030 Achieving carbon intensity reduction of 45% over 2005 levels by 2030 Achieving net zero by 2070 ...Now it is 2024 already....lot of ground to cover I guess...! #ESG #Netzero #Sustainability
