I know not all of you have finished your 2025 plans yet - take this course so that you can inform your work for next year with these critical concepts. 2. It is excellent for funders AND fundees - anyone and everyone in the non-profit and charitable ecosystem can learn something. It's rare to be able to come together in this way in this sector. 3. It is a mix of practical tips and tools you can start using right away and more challenging questions and ideas that will change the way you think about reconciliation and justice, leaving you pondering for days and months (like me). 4. Everyone gained something that they are taking to their jobs and sharing across the organization. 5. As July comes to a wrap, I want to express my deepest appreciation to all who made our conversation earlier this month possible at the Forum Conference in St. Louis! Nancy Sanabria (she/her) and Laura Smith for your trust, camaraderie, and candor; David Maurrasse for sharing your wisdom across the years; and Traci Slater-Rigaud and the United Philanthropy Forum community for the invitation and opportunity. And always grateful for Philanthropy New York and my colleagues' support, one of whom reminded me yesterday to share the 3 Rs from my remarks - so below is a summary. Spoiler: Although this panel is entitled "Advancing Racial Equity through Cohort Learning," cohort-based learning (CBL) is only one tool we use to support our funder members' journey in advancing more racially equitable practices within philanthropy: More importantly, the work of bringing folks along requires Resourcefulness, Relationship-Building, and Repetition (3 Rs). -- Resourcefulness: In other words, creativity. We use all the tools in our toolbox as philanthropy-mobilizing organizations: peer networks, issue-based working groups, skills-building programs, policy work, CBLs. With these wrap-around strategies, we nurture folks' learning, leadership, and growth in accessing their spheres of influence to effect change. We support their self-directed learning journey towards shifting practices. -- Relationship-building: Invite people in, and invite people to invite people in. Create the conditions for folks to learn, listen, engage, have difficult conversations, to increase trust and depth of relationships over multiple and consistent engagements. So when they're ready to act, they move together. -- Repetition: Regardless of the audience, which room or zoom we're in, what the session topic is, we remain clear and consistent, leading with our values and our commitments in service to a more democratic and just future. Rinse and repeat. We need each other to stay the course. And we need to remind ourselves that this is "forever work," and forever work requires Resourcefulness, Relationship-building, and Repetition - the 3 Rs. And might I add a fourth in this writing? Rest.

I've been in a bit of a startup bubble ?? the last few years, so last night it was refreshing to be immersed in a new community, filled with fresh faces and ideas (courtesy of Queensland Gives by Queensland Community Foundation). There's something special about being in a room surrounded by people who selflessly dedicate so much of their time and energy to helping support others and the environment. I've been thinking a lot recently about where there are potential intersections between the approach and focus of #NFPs and the world of #startups and #venturecapital. While many would probably see them as 'chalk and cheese' (one focused on financial returns at all costs, while the other forgoes financial gain altogether), they share quite a few common traits: 1?? Commonly inspired by a personal experience of the founder 2?? A vision for a better way/ better future and a fierce passion for making this change while others might be ok with the status quo 3?? Require entrepreneurial spirit and smarts to start and survive I think these common traits make them ripe for more collaboration and sharing of insights, yet it's quite rare to see Australian tech startups partnering meaningfully with not-for-profits who share similar goals or values. Why is this? ?? I'd love to know more about examples of this happening. Last week I had yet another of those very special evenings in the presence of people whose generosity, honesty and thoughtful contributions elevate and inspire us all ? Thank you so much to our incredible speakers Steve Morgan of the Steve Morgan Foundation, Shalni Arora OBE and Bill Holroyd for leading the way in driving a vibrant philanthropic culture across the country, fostering collaboration, momentum and focus on the specific needs of local communities. In our broad and deep conversation about their personal stories and lessons learnt, a few key themes emerged for me as the biggest takeaways for donors - ? Balancing accountability and trust is challenging to learn but extremely important - we need to find great partners and then trust them to do what they do best ? Get informed and listen to what others are telling you - particularly those closest to issues ?Your time, your advocacy and your convening power may be more powerful than your money - think about the gaps and levers needed to make a change within a system ? Collaboration across organisations and sectors is the only way we are going to make sustainable changes at scale ? Keep it simple, don’t worry about the perfect strategy - get started and iterate along the way ? Just do your best. Don’t let imposter syndrome stop you from starting or doing something And finally, thank you Bill Holroyd for sharing so beautifully how giving back has, for you been the “missing piece” in leading a successful and fulfilling life. ???? Please check out this timely and important op-ed in Inside Philanthropy from my FSG and Collective Impact Forum colleagues Cindy Santos, Monique Miles, and Jennifer Splansky Juster. The recent Fearless Fund ruling underscores the need for philanthropy to double down on supporting multisector place-based partnerships as a key strategy for advancing equity at a local level. "Philanthropy can significantly influence the direction of the social change ecosystem by providing crucial funding, strategic guidance and credibility to social justice initiatives and nonprofits. In these challenging times, philanthropy has a role to play as an empowering source to support place-based partnerships and continue to advance equity." They name specific ways funders can provide protection and continued funding for equity initiatives, including: ? Fund both "offense" and "defense," in support of strategies to keep equity work centered ? Strengthen collaborative infrastructure so partners can move their agendas forward ? Fortify critical communication strategies and narrative change work ? Prioritize wellness for leaders, especially leaders of color doing this work ?
