Congress has passed an emergency funding bill to provide an additional $2.9 billion in funding to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, to ensure veterans continue to receive their pension and disability benefits. Numerous Veteran Service Organizations across the United States joined to endorse Senator Tester’s Bill, to include the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), DAV (Disabled American Veterans), Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), Wounded Warrior Project, Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), and Jewish War Veterans of the USA. For unknown reasons, The American Legion’s Government Affairs office, in DC, did not provide an endorsement for the bi-partisan emergency funding legislation, despite an outpouring of support from members. TAL also did not provide a statement for record in last weeks Congressional hearing on the issue. The bill, dubbed the Veterans Benefits Continuity and Accountability Supplemental Appropriations Act, also calls for the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide explanation for the gross miscalculations in their budget. The battle for our veterans doesn't always end on the battlefield. Retired Major Jim P Thrash, a United States Air Force veteran and my father, faced the lasting impact of his service. Exposed to Agent Orange during missions in Vietnam, he later battled Parkinson's Disease and Parkinson's Dementia. Sadly, his story is not unique. With over 110,000 U.S. military veterans currently living with Parkinson’s, the need for support is evident. From 2001 to 2018, the number of veterans with Parkinson’s increased by 38 percent. Exposure to toxins, burn pits, and traumatic brain injury puts service members at higher risk. Advocacy efforts have led to a significant $4.2 million boost in funding for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education, and Clinical Centers (PADRECCs). This increase aims to enhance services for veterans combating Parkinson's. This Veteran’s Day, let's stand together for our veterans. Congress is deliberating on funding for PADRECCs and the Department of Defense’s Parkinson’s Research Program.
