In November 2023 at the Small Business Owners Community conference, I had the privilege of discussing the sustainability journey with Craig Culvers, the visionary behind Culver's Restaurants. When asked about their sustainability practices, Craig highlighted their commitment to sourcing locally—a pivotal step towards a greener future. He candidly acknowledged the need for further action, underscoring a vital ingredient in our collective environmental efforts: honesty. Honesty is essential as we navigate the complexities of sustainability. It allows us to celebrate our progress, however modest, and confront the challenges that lie ahead. It was lovely hosting the Cambridge Network's Sustainability Peer Group at Bidwells cafe in our Cambridge office. We heard an excellent presentation from Nigel Clark, Cambridge Marketing College on the topic of "Sustainability standards and certifications: what do they all mean, which ones should you sign up to and how do you use them to achieve your organisation's sustainability goals?" We discussed how the sustainability reporting landscape has changed over the last 20 years. Back in 2004, sustainability was the purvey of only the wealthiest and most progressive companies; it's now a must for everyone. This comes with a heavy burden on reporting and disclosure, sometimes to the detriment of making the changes required to deliver the intended outcomes. What is clear is that, whilst there is still so much to do, there are far more of us involved, whether in dedicated or part roles. We all believe in transforming our businesses and those of others for the betterment of our society, environment, and economy. Which is why we embarked on our journey to achieving CSR Gold Accreditation, demonstrating how far we have come with our continued commitment to sustainability over the past decade. We have always been committed to being responsible in where we source from, who we work with and how we conduct our work, but our sustainability journey really started when we joined the Good Business Charter in 2022. This led to us applying for CSR Accreditation which involved incorporating the four pillars of social responsibility into our core business activities: environment, workplace, community and philanthropy.
