For example, #adhesives are used for the screw- and weld-free attachment of heat sinks, and sealants are used for protecting components and structures from mechanical shock and vibration. Adhesive/sealant selection will be largely driven by the application. For example, what mechanical, thermal and electrical properties are desired? The PRIN 2022 PNRR project "GLASS_Trea.S.U.Res - Glass based Treatments for Sustainable Upcycling of Inorganic Residues" (P2022S4TK2) is still on the run with dissemination. I was happy to attend the 97th conference of the German Society of Glass Technology (DGG), in the wonderful city of Aachen: https://lnkd.in/d9UTqB7j In particular, I presented the contribution: "Mechanism and applications of cold consolidation of fine glass powders by means of 'weak' alkali activation" Once more, I showed the findings on the hardening of pharmaceutical waste glass, with the support of Prof. Sharon Ashbrook and her group from the University of St Andrews (UK), but the meeting was an occasion to discuss the first specific output of GLASS_Trea.S.U.Res. Cementitious matrices are feasible simply by attacking fine glass powders with relatively diluted alkaline aqueous solutions (NaOH and KOH in a molarity not exceeding 3M), nearly independently from the glass chemistry. Upon drying of supensions, one particle may bind to another just by condensation of silanols (Si-OH, promoted by OH- ions). Strong Si-O-Si bonds create a sort of 'skeleton' of hardened powders; dissolution products remain in the voids, but they may be washed away. Hydrated alkali carbonates (formed by interaction of Na+ and K+, from the activating solution, with the atmosphere) do the same. Pharmaceutical glass could give the false impression that B2O3 and Al2O3 could have some impact; attempts with other commercial glasses (container and flat soda-lime glass, opal glass) demonstrate that the key to hardening is the above mentioned formation of Si-O-Si bridges between adjacent particles. Better if alkali ions, which could destabilize these bridges, stay trapped in carbonates... microwave heating, besides accelerating the drying, has a great potential in stimulating this.
