Imagine your million-dollar drilling operation grinding to a halt because you ran out of pipe dope. Sounds absurd, right? Yet, that’s exactly what happened to a client of ours. When we performed a Supply Chain Assessment, we discovered their entire inventory management process boiled down to BYOP—Bring Your Own Pants. No system, no checks, just scribbled notes on work clothes. The result? Sky-high downtime costs and chaos. For over 20 years, I’ve led inventory management projects across the globe—spanning energy, manufacturing, and logistics. And I’ve seen my fair share of inefficiencies, but this BYOP (literally writing material IDs on pants) was a first. Here’s what we uncovered: 1?? There was no plan to track high-usage items stored outside secure locations. 2?? Rig managers avoided the warehouse because they didn’t know how to assess or contribute to inventory management. 3?? The “system” relied on memory and handwritten notes—leading to delayed issuance and critical stockouts. To fix this, we implemented: ? A robust process for managing unsecured inventory, with frequent cycle counts. ? A checklist for rig managers to evaluate and support warehouse operations effectively. ? Next, I head to Shipping and Receiving to ensure we have the necessary paperwork. Our day often involves scheduled truck appointments, direct pipe discharges, pipe movement in and out of our inspection building, and crews breaking bundles. We close the day by gathering, reviewing, and filing paperwork. Last week, while directionally drilling for a 6” gas line, Gary encountered resistance underground. Trusting his instincts, he immediately ceased operations. Upon investigation, the team uncovered an old, unmarked storm drain—preventing what could have been a hazardous situation. Gary's quick thinking underscores a vital safety message: If you see something, own it. If you walk by, you condone it. His actions exemplify our commitment to not only following safety procedures but enhancing them, ensuring the well-being of our community and team.
