I've had the privilege of working with the founder of e4usa for decades. There is not another person so dedicated to diversifying and democratizing engineering education, and the phenomenal success of e4usa reflects this well. Engineers are problem solvers, and use a systematic approach to develop, evaluate and implement solutions. While degreed engineers require post secondary training and skills to work in the field, the problem solving, teamwork based approach at the root of the e4usa curricula is what EVERY human needs to learn and practice in high school. It opens up pathways for every student, whether they are interested in engineering careers or not, because what it teaches enables high schoolers to learn how to collaborate with others productively, solve problems in a systematic way, make data driven decisions, and fail, and then make changes and improvements in their designs based on evidence and data. These skill sets are absolutely critical for our youth and our country to be successful, no matter WHAT profession they are dreaming of. I strongly recommend every school and district review the program and reach out for more information at e4usa.org. NO huge price tags for specialized equipment, top notch and collaborative professional learning, a vibrant community of practice and peer reviewed research---e4usa.org has it all.
We’re thrilled to share that e4usa is the cover story in the Winter 2024 edition of American Society for Engineering Education's magazine, PRISM! ?? The article, titled Next-Gen Design, highlights e4usa’s incredible journey—from our roots as a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded program at the University of Maryland, led by PI Darryll Pines, to our current standing as a fully-established non-profit under the leadership of our Executive Director, Stacy Klein-Gardner. ?? This milestone is a testament to the transformative impact of engineering education for ALL. Be sure to check your mailboxes for the Winter edition and learn more about our mission and growth story! Wow, it is interesting. Another open access journal association was found, called COAJ (China Open Access Journal). As stated at website, COAJ (China Open Access Journal) is an open access, academic, non-profit journal database that contains open access journals covering various disciplines. It adopts a strict review mechanism to ensure the quality of the journals and articles included, and is committed to providing academic researchers and readers with free access to high-quality academic resources. #openaccess #academicjournals #chinaexpert #doaj

Must-read for anyone in science: https://lnkd.in/eTidRWAZ "Scientists are increasingly overwhelmed by the volume of articles being published. The total number of articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science has grown exponentially in recent years; in 2022 the article total was ~47% higher than in 2016, which has outpaced the limited growth — if any — in the number of practicing scientists." Given that peer-review costs multiple billions a year (https://lnkd.in/etVGb_9c), and taking into account publication charges. This is a loooooot of wasted public & charity money! We need to figure out how to publish less, cheaper, and better.

Network - what do we think about the ethical problems with "for-profit" universities? I am trying to find the objective problem with them, other than that excess funding is not ALWAYS re-distributed into educational quality. One particular example of this that I have found is that for-profit colleges oftentimes do not have the same library resources that public or private non-profit universities have (databases, mostly). It seems like certain people want to villainize this sector of higher education without much merit to the arguments. Maybe I am wrong - however, I would love to discuss this with anyone who has more information than I.

The Trump Administration's DEI activities will impact so many non-profits, companies, universities, people, etc. So many organizations receive government grant funding. So many grant applications have DEI statements/focuses since this has been (and still is by the way... ) important. As the new administration reviews grants (especially funded ones), so many will have DEI statements... what will that mean for funding? They cannot possibly deny funding to almost all already funded grants right? ... and for grants in review now, that were written weeks/months ago, they most likely will have DEI statements in them. This below is wording from a university website about Including Equity and Diversity Statements in Grant Proposals. This was written prior to the new administration.... A number of the largest scientific grant making institutions have established a conscious effort to fund and promote a diverse workforce, an inclusive research community, and increased exposure to science for underrepresented youth. Incorporating diversity and inclusion themes will likely benefit any grant proposal at the institutions listed below; many of them advertise specific calls for projects aimed at increasing access to science. A few prominent examples from each sector are provided, but this list is not exhaustive. Government funding organizations Department of Defense Department of Education National Institutes of Health National Science Foundation National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Private foundations Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Sloan Foundation Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation Professional organizations American Association for the Advancement of Science Society for Neuroscience American Chemical Society Sigma Xi

The current publishing system is broken! ???? The high costs of traditional publishing are becoming harder to manage. Many in the research community want to ???????? ???????? ?????????????? ???? ???????????????????? ???? ?????????? ??????-???????????? ????????????. Diamond #OpenAccess is a novel approach that allows researchers to publish their work without charging fees to either authors or readers. This model focuses on the quality of the research, and not on the authors’ funding ability. But, how will we pay for this new model? Will it really be cheaper? And how can we make non-profit journals respected like big commercial ones? Check out today's explainer for: - Insights on the current state of publishing,? - The benefits of diamond open access,? - The work needed to make this change happen! This recent study by Sible Andringa, maria mos, Catherine van Beuningen, Paz González, Jos Hornikx, and Rasmus Steinkrauss provides a deep dive into the issues with current open access models and why diamond open access is the best case scenario for scientists. The InFTF is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting open and modern financial technologies worldwide. The InFTF believes that it is possible to significantly improve transactional systems, making them more efficient, simple, and accessible to citizens, businesses, organizations, countries, and markets. Exchanging money, energy and knowledge forms the foundation of any culture and its progress.?Therefore, we must continue to innovate, accelerating the transition to faster, more digital, and secure systems. Achieving this requires not only building new solutions but also investing time in modernizing, streamlining, and refining existing processes. Research is a key element in advancing this mission. For this reason, the InFTF actively supports research across multiple fields, providing over 100 scholarships to students of various nationalities and disciplines pursuing higher education. In the following video documentary, filmed in the spring of 2024, Dennis Horstman-Maassen captures the delivery of 18 grants to students at TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology. Through his lens, we get a glimpse into the lives of these students and their research on open financial technologies, undertaken with the guidance of supportive faculty members. The organization also hosts a banquet for the students, offering them a moment to unwind, interact, and share their aspirations and projects with peers and teachers in a relaxed setting. The InFTF looks forward to continuing its collaboration with educational institutions that are deeply invested in their students and in creating a brighter future. Elinor Toming
