I want to share an experience that captures the heart and growth of my current chapter after leaving the corporate space to develop Let The Beat Build (LTBB) and the incredible next step we’re taking. Having come from humble beginnings, working with underserved youth has been nothing short of transformative and part of my duty. Through the rhythm of beats and the power of music production, I’ve witnessed young individuals grow in ways that words can barely capture. Their creativity, emotional growth, and resilience blossomed in our programs—elevating their voices and making them feel heard in spaces where they often weren’t. These students didn’t just learn music production; they found parts of themselves, becoming leaders in their own right. The magic, though, truly came alive when the impact of our work expanded beyond the youth programs. After leading a leadership summit for education leaders, the response was overwhelming. Watching these adult participants dive into collaborative music-making with the same enthusiasm and vulnerability we nurture in our youth was remarkable to see, though not entirely surprising. Music breaks barriers. It was a moment where leaders remembered what it meant to play, create, and grow. And without planning it, something incredible happened—it sparked an idea… What if we used this platform for corporate team building? With this new direction, we aren’t just evolving—we’re bridging worlds. We are now developing corporate team-building programs rooted in music production, fostering collaboration, creativity, and emotional connection among professionals. But the best part? Over time, our students (high schoolers and college students) are coming along on this journey. Through this expansion, we’re opening pathways for young participants in our org to step into these after school programming and professional spaces—gaining valuable employment, mentorship, and real-world experience working alongside summer programs and hopefully one day, to corporations. It’s a cycle of empowerment: the students we taught are now becoming educators, facilitators, and leaders themselves. This moment is special, not just because of where I’ve been, but because of where we’re going. The energy from the youth programs is taking on a life of its own—impacting adults, creating job opportunities, and expanding into new territories. It’s a testament to how the simple act of creating music together can build bridges across generations, backgrounds, and industries. As I step boldly into this new chapter, I’m grateful for the journey, the surprises, the people that helped along the way, and the life our mission has taken on. Last week, I met with people from our GALE graduate development program—our program for entry-level marketers. I was asked a bunch of great questions. One of them was, “Do I have any regrets, or would I have done anything differently at the start of my career?” The answer is yes. Many things. Here’s one... After studying History and Performing Arts in college, my ambition was to become a working musician and actor. I had a good run playing guitar in a touring indie rock band, Stereobate, but I made missteps. One was music school. I had the opportunity to attend Berklee College of Music. I turned it down - “music school wasn’t punk rock.” I didn’t think I needed it. On the acting side, my theater professor from college told me I had talent, and he could get me an audition at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre, a well-respected program originally taught by Sanford Meisner. Coincidentally, my first apartment shared a courtyard with the school. I had a direct view of the classes and students every day. It was staring me right in the face. Yet, I never took him up on the offer. I was intimidated by the audition process. I might have ended up in the same place for all I know. Which is not bad. I get to solve business problems with creativity for a living. But I regret saying no. The wiser thing to do is to say yes and be open to new experiences and opportunities. Being closed off is dumb. You don’t progress. In his great book, "The Creative Act: A Way of Being," Rick Rubin speaks at length about openness. It’s how you also unlock your best creative thinking and ideas. The lesson here is to put yourself out there in various ways and never stop, no matter what the stage of your life and career. Unless you go, you’ll never know. The other day someone told me, “the club you founded was the best part of my college experience!” After my initial shock, and the extreme gratitude I felt for this person, I was reminded that you never truly know how much impact your actions may have on other people’s lives. A conversation that was happening during my time in undergrad was the lack of music business education and tools available to us. We all felt severely deficient in our understanding of how to actually make a music career happen (sound familiar?). So what do you do when you need something that doesn’t exist? You create it! I started working with other students on creating a club that would give all of us the invaluable tools needed to have a performance career, and the Classical Singers Career Development Club at Queens College was born. We created workshops, offered master classes, hosted panel discussions, presented recitals, even mounted quality student productions of operas with orchestra. Fast forward to 2024, I’m randomly chatting with another singer with whom I overlapped a bit while in school. Our college experience came up, and this singer told me that they had a really hard time at that school, but that the CSCDC was, by far, the highlight of their college experience. I was honestly speechless. Hearing this from a fellow alum made me realize how much this thing I created ended up being so impactful in someone else’s life. The CSCDC was created to help my community get the kind of support and information I knew we all needed in order to survive, and actually do well, in the insane business of music. This is also why I created The Marketable Musician, which celebrated its 4-year anniversary last week. To help musicians learn about the business side of music, grow their mindsets, and set themselves up for success with their own ideas that may have a profound impact on others in the future! I've always been more focused on what's ahead than what's behind me, but looking back now, it’s clear that every step of my journey had a purpose. From cooking pizzas to shelving library books, managing live performances, and leading a classroom full of young musicians—each role taught me something invaluable. Now, as the founder of That Music Teacher, I run a company and manage a dedicated team, helping educators create more inclusive, engaging, and impactful classrooms. ?? What seemed like unrelated jobs were actually the foundation for a career built on inclusion, creativity, and empowering others. My passion for creating spaces where every student can succeed didn’t stop when I left teaching.
