Our "Hello, Mountain Mover!" curriculum expands our evidence-based lessons and helps participants: -Build the confidence to believe in themselves? -Take on challenges - even when it is hard -Strengthen their resilience with stick-with-it strategies -Develop life skills like choosing friends, learning from mistakes, and working together to make a difference in their community

How are you preparing yourself for teaching success--DURING summer break? ?? *Have you completely left your classroom behind? *Have you chalked up last year as "it is what it is"? *Have you jumped into respite and relaxation like there's no tomorrow? *Have you decided not to think about the challenges right now? Understandable. And necessary. We need spaces of time to decompress from the daily grind of making sure other people's kids are okay, often at the expense of ourselves. BUT... On to UDL's Guideline about Sustaining Effort and Persistence as taught in Novak Education's Intro to UDL Microcourse. . .The resources from the module focus mainly on the well-known concepts of Growth Mindset and Grit, but there was an interesting article that argued that knowing about Grit wasn't enough to help students; they needed a great relationship with their teacher. The article is here: https://lnkd.in/dJ67-4Au The guideline itself elaborates on creating meaningful and purposeful goals, supporting these goals, encouraging student collaboration and belonging, and giving students good feedback.

A few days ago, I received a message from a student, Sarah, who was struggling to keep up with her homework assignments. - She had multiple subjects, and with deadlines piling up, she felt completely overwhelmed. When we first connected, she was on the verge of giving up. - "I don’t know where to start," she told me. - "Every time I try to focus, my mind just gets flooded with everything else." It was clear that the pressure was taking a toll. So, we took a step back and broke down everything together. - We made a list of her assignments, prioritized them based on due dates, and even set time limits for each task. - Instead of tackling everything at once, we set small, manageable goals for each study session. One of the biggest challenges was keeping Sarah focused. So, we talked through some techniques to stay on track, like the Pomodoro Method—work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. - It helped Sarah feel like she could make real progress without burning out. By the end of our session, Sarah felt more in control. "I actually got through one assignment already!" she texted me later that day. "I feel like I can breathe now." Sometimes, all it takes is a little guidance and a fresh approach to turn a mountain of work into something manageable. And seeing Sarah regain her confidence reminded me why I love helping students succeed. So #GCSEs have begun... But you can support your students presently on study leave by recommending these strategies at home, and proactively support your other students for all their exams to come! ? Welcome to Thursday's #examseason signpost from STEER ?? Is this a student you teach? "I often question myself - what I think, say or do; what I look like; what my abilities are. I doubt if anyone will notice or value me and can easily feel overlooked or dismissed. I usually notice what's happening around me though and can be overly sensitive or empathic at times. I'm easily affected by what other people do or say and can react strongly to feedback. If I was struggling, I would doubt if I had the skills, qualities and resources to overcome these challenges." ?? At STEER Education, we call this a student who has a low Trust of Self. Students with a lower Trust of Self have a less defined sense of self. They are more questioning of their own qualities, skills, ideas and opinions and more influenced by what is happening around them. https://lnkd.in/eVuGVBy9 Here's a learning risk ?? for that student that came to mind: They may be over sensitive to feedback, making me defensive or overly compliant. As teachers, we can help them in the long term to build #resilience and #agency to choose how this feedback influences them with these simple strategies: ?? When you see them struggling, be careful not to step in and remove the struggle, see it as an opportunity to build their resilience. 1. Acknowledge and validate their frustration “I can see you're feeling frustrated. "What you're trying to do is very challenging.'' 2. Show confidence in their ability to overcome it. "I'm really proud of you for not giving up. You'll get there!" 3. Offer your support. "What can I do to support you?” ?? ?? Notice times when they can ruminate on negative comments. A visual strategy can help! "Let's imagine that comment as a weed that has been planted in your garden. If we keep thinking about it, we water it and then it takes root and grows. Or we can choose to pull that weed out and put it on the bonfire!'' Help them identify a situation where this strategy could help, and try it out! Did it work? ??
