Honouring the 80th Anniversary of D-Day: A Personal Reflection- Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a pivotal moment in history that changed the course of World War II and the world. As an ex-soldier, this day holds profound significance for me. Once, I had the privilege of visiting the battlefields of Normandy, where so many brave souls made the ultimate sacrifice. Walking those hallowed grounds, I was deeply moved by the sheer courage and determination of the Allied forces. The stories of bravery, resilience, and unity in the face of overwhelming odds are a testament to the human spirit and the unwavering commitment to freedom. Remembering D-Day is not just about honouring the past but also about recognizing the enduring values of courage, sacrifice, and solidarity. It’s a reminder that the freedoms we enjoy today were hard-won by those who came before us. As we reflect on this significant anniversary, let us ensure that the legacy of these heroes continues to inspire future generations. It also makes me wonder: would the kids of today make such sacrifices for their own children if we ever had to defend our freedoms? This question underscores the importance of remembering and teaching these vital lessons of history. In remembering D-Day, we honour the fallen and reaffirm our commitment to preserving the values they fought for. Their legacy is our responsibility, and we must never forget the lessons of history. #DDay80 #RememberingDday #NeverForget #Veterans #LegacyOfHeroes

Commemorating the heroes of the Battle of Normandy. The United Kingdom is marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day through a series of significant commemorations and events, both across the UK and in France. These events honour the brave soldiers (most of them teenagers) who risked and lost their lives for freedom and peace. D-Day is recognised as a turning point in World War II. Known as Operation Neptune, the Normandy landings represented the largest seaborne invasion in history and were a crucial step in liberating Western Europe from Nazi occupation. This successful allied invasion demonstrated remarkable military innovation and international collaboration. While the majority of the personnel involved in D-Day were from the UK, the United States, and Canada, the operation also included significant contributions from Australia, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, Greece, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and Poland. This coalition played a vital role in the allied victory. To commemorate this milestone anniversary, military historians are sharing the stories of Normandy veterans, focusing on those with unique or lesser-known roles in the campaign. These narratives help bring to light the diverse and heroic efforts of all who participated in this historic event, and most importantly keep these memories alive and significant for us all. I gotta geek out for a minute on some data Matthew Fults shared about The FIFTY. Our average time on site — how long people spend reading our stories — is averaging 7 minutes and 30 seconds (!!!!!). I remember through all my years in news when we would average 30 seconds on a story, and maybe — MAYBE! — 2 minutes on a longer form piece (if we were lucky). I can barely wrap my head around seven-and-a-half minutes. It's rewarding to see, though. In the past year, we have published more than 50 profiles on the most interesting athletes in the world — those who don't make headlines every day, yet those whose journeys inspire and uplift us — that are heavily researched, well-reported, and are so captivating that they're difficult to put down. Here are a few stories that sit with me and I often return to: Noelle Lambert, a rising lacrosse star who lost her leg in a horrific accident that she didn't let define her: https://lnkd.in/gH8VwQSi Chris Nikic, the first man with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman and who is fighting for more inclusivity in sports: https://lnkd.in/gf4Ad-AK Joe Blanton, a World Series-winning pitcher who retired and opened a vineyard: https://lnkd.in/gNBpf6-9 My takeaway from all this is that there's a hunger for original longform stories at a time when so much focus is on clicks and page views and regurgitating other people's work. I'm thankful to work for a company that is investing the time and resources for this kind of work. I hope you'll take the time to read our stories, and let me know your favorite: the50athletes.com. #data #journalism #longform #longformcontent

On this day in 1944, a turning point in history took place - the invasion of Normandy, known universally as D-Day. This event marked a significant shift in World War II, and it remains a moment of great interest even 77 years later. ?? I remember growing up, learning about D-Day, and being blown away by the courage shown by the Allied forces. Comprehending the magnitude of their sacrifice felt beyond my young years, and yet, the stories left a lasting impact. These anniversaries remind us to honor and treasure such historical events and never forget their significance. ?? Thanks to tech giants like Google, we now have interactive tools to engage with history in all new ways, such as Google Arts & Culture's exhibit "D-Day: A New Beginning". These digital spaces allow us to revisit the beaches where the soldiers landed, explore military strategies, and gain insights from veteran interviews—an encounter with history both intimate and enlightening.?? On this anniversary of D-Day, let's take a moment to appreciate the bravery of those soldiers who stormed the beaches and remember the role that day played in transforming our world. For those intrigued, I highly recommend the Google exhibit as a fitting tribute.?? What other historical events have resonated with you the most? Leave your thoughts below. #DDay #WWII #GoogleArtsAndCulture #HistoryMatters #WorldWarII #NormandyInvasion

As a prior collegiate athlete, I have always been fascinated by the lead option left play. It was one of my favorites, and as a highly recruited high school Left Tackle from South Florida, I made it my priority to "force" the outside block. But this play is more than just a game strategy. It's a metaphor for life. Just like the quarterback guides and develops the play on the tempo of the Left Tackle, we must take control of our lives and guide our own momentum. We can't always wait for others to make the first move. Sometimes we're the running backs, patiently waiting for our chance to shine. But we can't let life pass us by. We need to take the initiative and make our own opportunities. And just like in the lead option left play, every component involved has a job to do. We need a team of blockers, play-callers, and coaches to help guide us. It's what makes the play so special. So, let's take control of our lives and make our own plays. Watch the video below to see the lead option play in action. It's a must-see! #LifeLessons #TakeControl #VeerOptionLeft #laurens30day #resiliency #superbowl
