I've been reflecting the past few days on the Race Table Talks session I attended on Saturday facilitated by Laurabel Mba Consulting. Most of us didn't know each other. We came together, as a group of white women, nervous yet eager to participate in a conversation that challenged our inner biases and opened our minds to the racism that persists within ourselves and our communities. Although uncomfortable at times, it was an incredible experience and I strongly recommend all white folx attend. I'm committed to continuing the work to make myself a better ally to the racialized people in my community. We are each born color blind, our stereotypes and biases are learned and deeply engrained. We cannot call ourselves DEI advocates, if we are not intentional about interrupting the cycle in ourselves, our workplaces and most importantly our children. Laurabel will tell you that her son is what inspired her to take on this work, she has inspired me to do better for my son. How do I react when a family member says something racist? I learned the questions to ask myself on if, when and how I should address this with them. What pre-conceived assumptions do I carry that are incorrect? I learned that being racist is not the worst thing. It is an opportunity for acknowledgment and learning, so that tomorrow I will do better. As a business leader, how do I ensure I am fostering a safe an inclusive workplace for our racialized team members? It requires intentional, consistent and continuous effort to make DEI an expected and demonstrable value of our organization. As the mother a Inuk child, I think often about the racism my child will face throughout his life. I will never fully understand his experience or be able to protect him from the injustices he will face. He is a different color than me, when people learn he is adopted, people most commonly say, "He is so lucky". They carry preconceived assumptions and biases about the life he might have had in his Inuit community. I carried them too before his adoption. I know now how wrong they are and am committed to advocating for the empowerment, fair treatment and reconciliation of Indigenous peoples. During last week's call as part of the personal and professional development training associated with being a member of Black Sisters in STEM , 3 things that stood out to me from the session were: 1. Just because I do something so well doesn't negate my bad habits. 2. Do not do things that are not okay and make them okay in your life. 3. Spirit of error is dangerous. Based on these teachings from our founder Nyamekye (Yah-MEH-chay) Wilson, I have decided to apply these things in my life by 1. Taking out time to re evaluate myself in all aspects of my life and identify my strengths and weaknesses to know which areas need improvement. 2. Take full accountability for the decisions that I make by being intentional and focused. 3. Unfortunately, the impact of Black History Month can often be fleeting. While it serves as a vital opportunity to spotlight significant figures, events, and contributions, the challenge lies in ensuring that this education reaches those who need it most. Engaging at-risk youth requires more than just programming during a specific month; it necessitates ongoing efforts, mentorship, and connections to cultural history that are relevant to their lives. This could involve community programs, workshops, storytelling sessions, or even integrating these themes into school curricula throughout the year. Additionally, we must consider how narratives are delivered. For young people entrenched in violence or hardship, seeing relatable figures who have overcome similar struggles can be empowering. Real-life stories of resilience from their own communities, combined with a broader understanding of their heritage, can ignite hope and inspire change. Ultimately, creating a culture where Black history is acknowledged every day—as part of a larger conversation about identity, belonging, and potential—can help ground young people and provide them with the tools they need to channel their energies positively. It is essential to create spaces where they feel seen, heard, and valued, and where they can learn the richness of their history alongside the skills necessary to navigate and thrive in today’s world. This comprehensive approach can help nurture their identities and guide them toward a path of constructive action rather than violence. A king teaches his son how to become a king, A queen teaches her daughter to become a queen. How can our children develop their potentials if we do not embarace it and lead by example. This is what Project Lifeline teaches, we educate on our god given strength to navigate our paths to align our youth with their inner cultural attributes. Being black is not just the colour of our skin, it is a way of life and most of all it is a spiritual connection to our ancestoral heritage.
