Reflecting on Visit to the Women's Education and Research Centre in Colombo Last week, as part of the FLMBaRI organised by CREA, I had the extraordinary opportunity to visit the Women's Education and Research Centre (WERC) in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This visit was not just an eye-opener but a deep dive into the nuanced intersections of caste, class, and religion and their profound impact on women's lives in South Asia. Stepping into the oldest feminist-run library in Sri Lanka, I was surrounded by a wealth of knowledge. The shelves were lined with books authored by feminist writers from Sri Lanka and around the globe, each telling stories of resilience, struggle, and the fight for equality. Our interaction with the WERC team was profoundly insightful. We delved into critical issues affecting women, from menstrual health and hygiene practices in rural and urban spaces to the autonomy and bodily rights of women. The discussions also covered how conflict shapes women's lives, influencing their decision-making and affecting their well-being. One of the most striking aspects of our visit was the shared understanding of how women are marginalized across nation-states. Despite the varied issues we face, they are all rooted in patriarchal structures that span across borders. Our discussions underscored the importance of understanding the power dynamics, history, and politics of each country and how patriarchal structures are institutionalized and ingrained within us. The call for cross-border solidarity and the sharing of learnings emerged as a pivotal theme. It's clear that one of the first steps towards supporting one another is to share our experiences, understand the unique challenges we face, and unite in our efforts to dismantle the patriarchal structures that bind us. This visit was a reminder of the power of collective action and the importance of feminist spaces like WERC that continue to inspire and educate. Let's carry forward the spirit of solidarity, learning, and support as we work towards a more equitable world for all women. #feminism #solidarity #womensrights #education #research #srilanka #FLMBaRI #CREA #empowerment #socialjustice
WERC was happy to host a group of vibrant South Asian leaders for a knowledge-sharing session where we learnt about the common and different issues we face as feminist activists in South Asia. This half-day site visit was part of CREA's annual week-long Feminist Leadership, Movement Building and Rights Institute for 30 passionate activists from South Asia.

More often these days, we are seeing more examples of female leadership. We are no longer few and far between. However, there is a painful reality which we must vigorously discuss with a view for change. Female leadership takes heart and courage. It is not a linear process for us. Though we keep finding solutions to wicked problems and we place people, passion and purpose at the center, we cannot survive without the support from our fellow females. It takes females supporting female leadership for female leaders to thrive. As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us be reminded that it is not about female supremacy and female liberation but rather advocating and prioritizing female collaboration, female support and female empowerment. We are not each other’s competition but rather each other’s reinforcement. We are stronger together. Happy International Women’s Day!

I could feel myself vigorously nodding my head as soon as I read the headline of this article. "The modern workplace was designed by dominant group members for dominant group members—primarily white, straight, cisgender, non-disabled men—to succeed...Many well-intentioned DEI programs offer skills-based training for historically marginalized groups to develop leadership skills, yet these groups do not necessarily need special development; they need better systems." At Ambition Theory, it's been refreshing to see more and more companies recognizing that the burden of changing the construction industry so it's more welcoming for women cannot fall on the shoulders of women. That said, we're also big fans of a both-and approach: working to change the systems holding women back AND equipping women with the leadership skills to get around the barriers that hold them back. That's what our upcoming Leadership Accelerator will help women do! Learn more about it here: https://buff.ly/3hTlAbc.
