I appreciate this reflection on the progress made and the initiatives that have advanced the priority to understand and improve the built environment’s impact on health and well-being. It’s been a privilege to lead one of those flagship initiatives at Reinvestment Fund with RWJF support and thought leadership collaboration. #InvestHealth continues to be a model of longer term engagement in cities as a way to strengthen relationships across sectors within and among small to midsized cities investing in more equitable community development. Invest Health has been patient and flexible in meeting local community leaders where they are, as far as supporting capacity and priorities. Equitable neighborhood change is a long-term commitment and a whole community approach, requiring resources that start with organizing residents for change, building trust through action, and changing systems that hinder health and racial equity so all people thrive. So what’s next? Well, what’s been built so far is a unique culture of collaboration. And it goes beyond any one initiative. The alliances I’ve made through an intermediary learning network I started 4 years ago with leaders that include Build Healthy Places Network and many others have endured as well, but also go beyond community development, since we know systems change doesn’t happen in a vacuum when we’re considering the broader cross-sector ecosystem working towards healthy communities. I believe that the next phase of this work lies in building a stronger infrastructure that ties us all together in an intentional way for substantial collective impact in high opportunity places. Our silos are our own institutional systems barriers and I’m betting on transparency and longer term collaboration to lead us into the next quarter century and would love to see funders in lock step with us. I honor our own learnings that stem from the early mustard seed thought leadership and continued curation by Donald Schwarz, Amy Gillman, Don Hinkle-Brown, Abbey Cofsky, Amanda High, Oktawia Wojcik, Beth Siegel and many strategic partners. And a thank you to our 50 cities, advisors, staff and student learners (especially my colleagues Sara Vernon Sterman, Leah Rusenko, Jacob Kraybill and the Reinvestment Fund village of support). A decade ago, @RWJF convened the Commission to Build a Healthier America to explore opportunities at the intersection of community development and health. Since then, we have been working with our partners to explore new approaches to community development that center the voices of residents and broaden the focus to consider the impact of less traditional factors like access to clean drinking water or how transportation can bolster or harm a community.
