MOMS is able to embrace mothers early – during pregnancy – when we can make a lasting difference. By meeting with a mom each month through the baby’s first year, we build her trust along the way and get to know her and her family intimately. We don’t just provide pregnancy education, we help her navigate health care, well-being, housing, food and other basic resources to ensure stability and security for the mom, baby and family. Our Maternal Child Health Workers coach her so she can become more self-sufficient, confident and empowered. And it’s working. 100% of participants in our Thriving Relationships program, which supports those affected by domestic abuse with knowledge and awareness of unhealthy behaviors in relationships, can identify a trusted person for ongoing support. 91% said they can identify healthy responses to domestic violence risks. ?? This week is Black Baby Loss Awarness Week. The second year of this awareness campaign started by Alicia Burnett is an opportunity to not only support those Black families who have lost a child, but also to help address the inequities and causes that can reduce this and provide support for safer healthier pregnancies. Unfortunately, Black women and birthing people continue to be at higher risk of pregnancy complications and loss. Compared to White women and birthing people they are: ? more than twice as likely to have a stillbirth, ? 40% more likely to have a miscarriage, ? more likely to have postnatal depression, ?the least likely to access support or treatment after birth. Therefore it is important to create this space to highlight these issues and support bereaved families as well as amplifying calls for the need for culturally competent care. As we enter the IDG Month, I wish to highlight a comment from my friend Elijah Don Bonyo; "Try to imagine a girl of 10 years being pregnant, meaning at 11, this girlchild is a mother and if the baby is not well protected and taken good care of, When the girl gets to 20 years old, and her own child who by then is 10 is also defiled and gets pregnant, then we are talking of being a grandmother at 20 years. A very sad situation." This heavy statement was accompanied by statistics of teen pregnancy and I kept asking myself questions 1. what was done or not done well? 2. Do the girls get to accomplish their vision after childbirth? 3. now that the babies are here, what about NCfECD for children of teen mothers?. 4. who breaks this cycle? 5. All the girls have a vision for their future how then do they get there? ??# ECD for children of teen mothers? #Whatstheirvisionforthefuture?

Groundwork DFW just released their new?report from their grassroots campaign to promote and understand WIC enrollment in Dallas. Of residents surveyed, the top misconceptions were: 1.) Thinking WIC benefits started at birth, not pregnancy 2.) Thinking applying for WIC would hurt citizenship status of themselves or family members Check out their recommendations for addressing misconceptions and other barriers in the report: https://lnkd.in/gYDt_ChK Marie Appel and her team are doing incredible work meeting community members where they are and connecting them with organizations to fill gaps in basic needs.

Today, the Women and Equalities Committee published a powerful report calling for statutory bereavement leave for anyone affected by pregnancy loss before 24 weeks. This long-overdue change would provide women and families with the time and support they need to grieve without fear of financial strain or workplace discrimination. The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust was honoured to contribute to this report. During the WEC hearing in November, Chief Executive Munira highlighted the significant physical and emotional toll of ectopic pregnancy loss and the need to ensure statutory leave is compassionate, inclusive, and recognises the unique challenges families face.
