When COVID-19 forced restaurants to close their doors in 2020, outdoor dining emerged as a critical survival strategy for New York City’s hospitality industry. What began as a series of temporary wooden structures quickly became a defining feature of the city’s streetscape, supporting over 100,000 restaurant jobs and revitalizing neighborhoods during a time of crisis. Fast forward to 2024, and outdoor dining has become a more complex issue, with city officials, restaurant owners, and residents grappling with its role in post-pandemic urban life. “The time, effort, and labor required to take these structures down and store them during the winter makes it impossible for many of us,” said Andrew Rigie, executive director of the NYC Hospitality Alliance. “It’s clear that without additional support, many restaurants will opt out entirely.” “The longer the temporary program ran, the more these unresolved issues—like noise and trash—escalated,” said Jackson Chabot, director of advocacy at the nonprofit Open Plans, Inc., “But the permanent program has the potential to create a better, more sustainable system for everyone.” #restaurantindustry #outdooordining #newyorkcity

There are signs for hope and optimism for restaurants in Chicago's downtown. Quite a few establishments see guest and revenue numbers back to 2019 or even higher. A combination of increased workers returning to their offices, more visitors coming to Chicago, more favorable lease terms, and modified operations with a focus on more profitable days and hours is helping the restaurants to perform better. The numbers confirm the positive momentum: The amount of space occupied by downtown restaurants ticked up slightly to 1.27 million, with especially the Fulton Market neighborhood being a growth engine with increasing its space devoted to food and beverage to 515,000 square feet, up from 430,000 two years earlier. Additionally, downtown foot traffic is up 8% over the last 12 months, and downtown's resident population reached 46,000 in 2023, an increase of almost 9% since 2020. Thank you to all the outstanding organizations supporting this positive momentum for Chicago's downtown, including the Chicago Loop Alliance, The Magnificent Mile? Association, the Illinois Restaurant Association, the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, World Business Chicago, Choose Chicago, and many more.

Highland park Restaurant Development Update, Restaurant with ‘fun vibe,’ ‘whimsy and warmth’ coming to Ravinia district in Highland Park Fresh plans from a budding restaurant group for a signature neighborhood in Highland Park are beginning to simmer. Project plans from Community Restaurant Group are calling for a new restaurant at 565 Roger Williams Ave. in the city’s Ravinia Business District. Highland Park’s Plan and Design Commission during its Tuesday, Jan. 7 meeting unanimously voted to recommend approval of the group’s request to remove seven existing parking spaces to accommodate outdoor dining seating for the proposed restaurant use. The existing space on Roger Williams Avenue is just over 4,100 square feet and is currently vacant, according to city documents. The site used to house a dry cleaning business. A one-story structure presently exists on the property, per the city. https://lnkd.in/gdKsBNN6

Love this article. One that's close to my heart, given most things that are planned for Crewe seem to go "sideways" mostly due to them being run by people with very little idea what the people of Crewe actually want, and have never lived there themselves. The new market at least is leading the way. Check out the full article and let me know what you think. WeGoAgain

It will be interesting to see how New Yorkers react when in November all the dining sheds are taken down for the winter, and they once again, for the first time in years, see our streets open and uncluttered as they were before Covid. Will it make people less enamored of the sheds once they realize what was lost to enable them? It will also be interesting to see how the restaurants react. Will they find that the sheds were not essential to their bottom line (especially factoring in the cost of taking down the sheds, paying 5 months of storage and putting them back up every year)?
Why Some of New York’s Snazziest Dining Sheds Are Headed for the Dumps

&D to close remaining Leeds site: The Angelica and Crafthouse site, which opened on the rooftop of the Trinity Leeds scheme in 2013, it to close its doors on 15 December due to “economic challenges”, according to D&D London. The company, which has restaurants in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Paris and New York, closed two of its other premises at Leeds Victoria Gate last year. A spokesperson for Trinity Leeds said the impact of the restaurant on the city’s dining scene “would continue for some time to come”. David Loewi, chief executive of D&D London, told BBC News that the decision to close the restaurant had been made “after thorough deliberation”. It had followed “a comprehensive review of business operations”, he said. “This decision follows and reflects the ongoing economic challenges facing the hospitality industry, with the long-term success and sustainability of D&D London in mind.” When Angelica and Crafthouse opened in Leeds, it was the firm’s first venue outside the capital. A spokesperson for Trinity Leeds said: “We’re sad to see Angelica and Crafthouse go after so many years at Trinity Leeds.” Last October, Calveton, the backer of Byron, and Breal Capital, completed a deal to acquire D&D London, which owns and operates circa 35 restaurants across the UK and internationally.
