The latest edition of the Global Zero Emission Vehicle Transition Roadmap, just announced at COP29, identifies key strategic challenges facing emerging market countries in their zero-emission vehicle transitions.? These include: 1. Building capacity across emerging markets and developing economies to develop and implement policy action 2. Improving access to and scaling finance 3. Increasing the availability of zero-emission vehicles in emerging markets and developing economies 4. Accelerating charging infrastructure roll-out 5. Lifecycle management of zero-emission vehicles, and battery components 6. ?? Yesterday, at the UK Pavillion during COP29's Science, Technology, and Innovation, Digitalisation Day, KCIC participated in a vital conversation on clean energy innovation. Our Research and Policy Officer, Vincent Ogaya, joined a panel discussion dubbed "Partnerships for Clean Energy Innovation: Needs and Opportunities on the Road to 1.5°C." He spoke alongside Demetrios Papathanasiou, Global Director for Energy and Extractives at the The World Bank, Lee McDonough Director-General for Net Zero, and Norela Constantinescu, Deputy Director at IRENA’s Innovation Technology Center. The session explored how global partnerships and investments in research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) are pivotal in keeping the 1.5°C goal within reach. It also delved into barriers to collaboration and strategies to unlock new opportunities for scalable, impactful solutions. In the session, we shared the insights on the challenges KCIC addresses in fostering climate-focused enterprises, and the lessons from our innovative partnerships that have propelled us over the years. The discussion underscored a critical point: one-third of the CO2 reductions needed to achieve net zero will come from technologies still in their prototype phase. This makes global innovation, cross-sector collaboration, and targeted investment in clean energy innovation not just important but essential for a sustainable future. This year, we took a significant step forward by measuring and including all Scope 3 supply chain emissions in our 2023 footprint data. Looking ahead to 2025, we are preparing to incorporate our financed emissions in our 2024 footprint, marking a pivotal stage in our Net-Zero planning. The energy transition is well underway, but as discussed, we still face some key challenges: ??Grid Expansion: We urgently need to bolster grid capacity to accommodate the rapid growth of renewables. ??Investment Risk Mitigation: Stronger public-private partnerships are essential to de-risk investments in climate-related technologies. ??Accelerated Execution: Digitalization is key to streamlining processes and speeding up the transition.
