What’s one thing you’ve learned on your helping journey – as a parent, friend, partner, or caregiver – or in a professional helping role?

**Be humble, stay curious.** I don’t give the same career advice to everyone, but I often start with these four words. The truth is it’s okay not to know stuff. Forget “Fake it till you make it”—we’re all faking it on some level and that's just bad advice anyway. The key to great work is staying humble enough to stay curious about what you don’t know whether it’s a company, a category, or in this case a culture in the grips of a mental health crisis. Recently, I worked with TryCycle Data Systems Inc. on a video for their Indigenous peer support tool, TalkingStick. TalkingStick helps people in Indigenous and First Nations communities connect with support safely, anonymously, and for free. In our kickoff call, I learned about the unique cultural, historical, and geographical barriers preventing Indigenous and First Nations communities from accessing mental health care. The scope and scale of the suffering I learned about was staggering, sobering, and infuriating. The stakes were high—this video needed to feel authentically Indigenous. If I missed the mark, trust could be broken, and those who needed help might not get it. I approached this project with humility and curiosity, studying Woodland Art and ensuring every word of my script and every visualization I developed were reverent, informed, respectful and not appropriative or exploitative. This was such a special project. When members of the Indigenous communities told me the video “felt like us,” I was speechless. Yes, it happens. Hearing that it's helping TalkingStick make real connections and impact in those communities... it doesn't get much more humbling than that. I'm honored and grateful to have played a small role in the great work that TryCycle is doing with TalkingStick. I don't share my work very often on LinkedIn, but this one feels important. Also important to give huge thanks to TryCycle for their openness and generosity during the research phase and to the wizards at Cultivator Content Labs for bringing this video to life. I used this shift to move from my work as a doctor to building a new career as a life coach and founding The Empowerment Clinic. This week has been a struggle ?? 2024 hasn’t started off as I expected. January is typically a quiet month isn’t it? Not this year, it’s almost mid February and it’s been NON STOP. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a busy lifestyle and I count myself lucky to have such a great network of people around me both in a professional and personal capacity, but where does it stop! Anyway, before I go down the path of oversharing, let me bring it back to this week! Below are some of the things I’ve had the pleasure of doing: 1?? Working on, and submitting an RFI for a global brand? 2?? Catching up with some great clients, who I can honestly say will be life long mates 3?? Lots of personal and professional development? 4?? Meeting some new faces and discussing their unique challenges 5?? Working with the team to streamline our plans for the remainder of the year and beyond Now this might not sound like a lot, but on top of my usual day to day calls, internal sessions, admin etc etc, it feels like it’s been a whirlwind. This week’s also coincides with my mums birthday and marks the second year anniversary since she passed - yes, I’ve had a few wobbles! A quick nod to me ma for navigating me through life and to where I am today (the image is one of me and the mrs visiting my mums bench) Also a shout out to Graham Watson. Graham’s an advocate for mental health & wellbeing at Titus and took some time out to listen and have an open and honest chat with me last week about some of my personal challenges! So what's the point in this post? the past few years has made me realise, I've never opened up or spoken about my feelings, I've always just got my head down and cracked on. Thoughts of the Week: One Minute Twice a Day “Quality is not an act, it is a habit.” ?????-?Aristotle ? When people are not satisfied with their lives, they want to make changes. Usually the changes are viewed as needing to be sudden, all or nothing, dramatic, which creates a barrier to actual execution, implementation and sustainability. ????? A surefire way to make changes is to implement them gradually, incrementally, calmly.?Small daily steps in the right direction. Then, if on top of that you are motivated to make additional massive improvements, that is a bonus, and in fact is made easier and set in motion by the small daily changes. ????? We have implemented in our Life x Mind app (https://lnkd.in/d_zjEPtx) a simple 4-items One Minute Self Therapy (therapy of Self by self), to be done in the AM. And a simple 4-items One Minute Self Improvement, to be done in the PM. Both of them focus your life on the positives, and in the right direction. Their results are cumulative, and transformative. If you do not have ?2 minutes a day to do them, you do not have a life. And you probably need to do them even more than the average person! ? Live. Happier. Longer.?
