Chick-fil-A Restaurants does it again! They’ve just launched a new drive-thru only concept to accelerate fulfillment of orders in response to the insane demand in their drive-thrus. It features an elevated kitchen twice the size of their typical restaurant above four lanes capable of holding up to 75 cars each. Plus they have conveyor belts to transport orders to team members in the fulfillment area who deliver to customers so there’s still a hospitality element. It’s worth noting that Taco Bell also launched a similar concept previously. Yet, in typical Chick-fil-A Restaurants fashion they’ve taken it to another level by offering lanes for both mobile orders and traditional drive-thru orders, plus there is a dedicated lane for 3rd party delivery orders. It seems like they worked backward from the customer and sweat all of the details. The concept is still a prototype depending on whether it delivers the intended results for customers. Order processing engine = the #POS is a data pull source on an array of data sources. How do we knit all the systems together. All data needs to go into one data warehouse, drive insights / making operational changes to better drive the business. We're looking for vendors - do they integrate and how? Esp on the independent operator side, it's particularly hard. We try to ask those tough questions and have open convos with other operators. Coffee shops, it seems, have decided they no longer want people inside. There’s been an undeniable shift across the nation of coffee shops switching to drive-thru only models. While many brands (both local and national) argue that the trend is a result of changing consumer habits I don’t buy it. Let’s face it – coffee shops are feeling the heat of labor strikes and increased demands from their employees, and switching to drive-thrus allows many of them to cut their overhead significant. Even if it means eliminating the whole appeal of a local coffee shop in the first place – as a place for people to meet, gather, and feel a part of the community. With many major chains jumping on the bandwagon, smaller independent shops have a unique opportunity to differentiate themselves. Owners should consider focusing on personalized customer experiences, specialty offerings, and community engagement to stand out in a crowded market.
