Could we share excess energy generated by our home solar panels? ?? This is what a new pilot project in Cornwall from Good Energy and GRYD is seeking to explore. They’ll buy excess solar power created by three homes in Cornwall and distribute it to their customers. James Rees, Director of Product and Propositions at Good Energy, says: “We know that decentralised, small scale power generation like rooftop solar has a huge part to play in decarbonising our energy system. Working with innovators like GRYD to find ways to accelerate the adoption of solar and lower the upfront cost barriers is a no brainer.” This is a great example of looking to untapped opportunities within existing infrastructure for our climate solutions. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin has approved the Vista Sands solar project at its full size of 1.3 gigawatts. As of 2022, the U.S. has installed 5.6 gigawatts of community solar, with projections to add over 6 gigawatts in the next five years, enough to power nearly 9 million homes. Active community solar projects exist in 41 states and Washington D.C., but the majority of this capacity is concentrated in states like New York, Minnesota, and Massachusetts. Community solar adoption varies widely across states due to state-level regulation, rather than federal oversight, resulting in diverse implementations nationwide. Currently, the most successful community solar states are those with established markets, but as more states adopt shared solar programs, this landscape is expected to evolve significantly in the coming years (Energy Sage).
