I’m finishing my 4th week at CodeSignal and it’s been a whirlwind of new people, ideas, and culture. I’m traveling home from my first onsite with them and I’d like to reflect a bit on what brought me here. Back in 2013, web development was seeing a bit of a revolution as we moved from static, back-end, technologies to heavy front-end focused “Single Page Applications” (SPAs).? My good friend Dennis Burton and I were doing a lot with these budding technologies and trying to figure out a fun and exciting way to teach the concept to others. We came up with a full-day CodeMash Conference workshop (hundreds of learners) with an accompanying application called Choose Your Own Application.? It took inspiration from the well-loved childhood book series to let the learner make choices as they built a full-blown application.? The learner was given the opportunity to choose their frontend framework (Backbone or Knockout… it was 2013), their language (JavaScript or CoffeeScript… see 2013), their backend framework (Node.js, Rails, or ASP.NET), and their deployment platform (Heroku or Azure).? There were dozens of permutations.? It was a LOT of content.? A LOT to test. The experience was VERY well received.? I was so honored and humbled by the number of people who learned that day.? After it was done, we asked: can we scale this to other content paths?? We laughed it off and said “nah, that was fun but it would be too much work”. If you know me, I get my energy from helping other people learn things.? That’s why I joined Khan Academy and stayed with them for 8 years.? Ultimately, it’s what led me to take the Director of Content and Content Platform at CodeSignal.? Although it’s not _exactly_ the same thing, I’m a part of a team now that is scaling the ideas behind Choose Your Own Application.? CodeSignal Learn (https://lnkd.in/gXHuMEKQ) is the most innovative technical learning platform I’ve seen yet.? We’re developing content at a VERY fast pace and we will for a very long time. Unlike static video or blog-base learning, we have a PRACTICE-based platform with an AI teacher/tutor named Cosmo (a space corgi!).? It’s all about mastery-based learning inside the browser IDE and Cosmo guiding you the entire way.? The entire experience is in a single place. I have only been here 4 weeks and I’m already extremely proud of what we’re building.? Watch this space.? We have some amazing content coming your way.

Every year is a journey. This one? It stretched us, challenged us, but it also brought fun, fulfillment, and some of our best work to date. Here we are: strong, healthy, ready for growth ahead. Of course, we faced challenges, but we always reminded ourselves that In the end, it’s quite simple: create extraordinary work, with a team that finds meaning in what they do, for clients who trust us to bring their vision to life. None of this happens without our team at Verve I United Playgrounds. Their energy, grit, and resilience are nothing short of inspiring. Together, we’ve grown stronger, taken bold steps, and proven that even in tough times, we rise. And of course, our incredible clients. Every project is a partnership. Your trust and courage fuels everything we do, year after year. For that, we’re endlessly grateful. Finally, to our colleagues at United Playgrounds: together, we’re building something remarkable. Next year will be one for the books, and I can’t wait to see what we’ll accomplish.

I can't tell you how much I used to dread "forced fun." Losing hours of my life with no ROI with the additional pressure of needing to cajole my team into participating. Insult on top of injury. Now we get to do things differently. "Team building" always needs a business reason so participants can understand why they are being asked to take time away from the work they need to get done and invest it into time with their colleagues. This business reason informs the tone and content of our time together and participants always get a say in how that time is spent. Not everyone will agree on what constitutes "fun," and so a skilled designer and facilitator are needed to balance the needs and wants for the activities. It takes a lot of strategic thought and preparation, but the outcome is worth it - achieving a business objective AND coming out a more connected team.
