Bright Lights, Big City: How Cincinnati’s Growing Film Industry Creates Opportunities for Local Talent Moving to L.A. to realize a dream of working on a major film is a stretch for many. But with films moving productions to Cincinnati, the chances of getting a role as an extra here can make it a reality. History has shown that all the lights and cameras tend to be concentrated in the rolling hills of Los Angeles, a far cry away from the Midwest charm of Cincinnati. However, due in large part to government initiatives and the hard work of various individuals and organizations, producing Hollywood films in Cincinnati has become a regular occurrence in recent years. According to Schlotman and Film Cincinnati, between 2019 and 2022, feature films and television shows brought in a total economic impact of $258 million to the Cincinnati region. During that same period, an estimated 1,873 jobs were created from these film productions. This demonstrates not only the impact these opportunities create for local talent but also for the local economy as a whole. “If we don’t bring the work, people don’t have the work. We try to create these opportunities for those working in film.” Schlotman hopes her team can continue bringing in work using the Ohio tax credit, and looks forward to when that investment is increased. The Ohio tax credit is a refundable tax credit on production cast and crew wages, plus other eligible in-state spending. Essentially, any money spent by a film production in Ohio gets a tax credit for their expenses. https://lnkd.in/g8TY6KPn

Tip for the Day: Is filming in Los Angeles dead? Depends on what you're referring to. While tv productions & series, reality and low budget features still abound, it's hard to find any feature films with over $10 million budgets & up anywhere in LA. Most to all studio films have moved out of the state. Many left for location purposes, however, the vast majority have left for the tax incentives/rebates offered by other states/countries. What used to be a thriving industry in LA for film production, is now becoming a ghost town. Who's to blame? Covid and the strikes definitely didn't help, however, the exodus was already underway prior to the Covid shutdown. To really understand the core reason, all one has to do is look north to Sacramento. California has one of the worst rebates/incentives in the country. Partially due to a film UNfriendly governor and state legislature. The cocky attitude that because the studios, agencies, talent and more are based in LA, that the state doesn't need to be competitive is the thinking of a 3rd grader. While billions of dollars are being spent (and mis-spent) on homeless in the state with little to show for it, $300 million is spent on film incentives (total/year). It was estimated that California lost nearly $9 billion in film production and related revenue in 2023. Many say the industry won't ever recover. That's incorrect. There's actually more productions going on at the present then in the last 20 years. Production is booming nationwide. Just not in LA. Atlanta, the Hollywood of the South, is experiencing film production growth faster then the state can keep up with. More productions (including all types of tv, film, streamers, etc.) shot in Georgia in 2023 then in Hollywood for the first time. And 2024? It won't even be close. Combine our film unfriendly governor and legislature, along with a California Film Commissioner that had no film production experience (soaps don't really count) & was appointed solely because she and her multi-million husband donated heavily to Newsom, and you have the perfect storm. Please note, this is not a democrat or republican issue. Both parties are equally unfriendly to film in California. So how do you fix it? California needs to bring back the bigger budget films (and the Mandalorian film the state praised is a start, but barely). The state government needs to be heavily hit by everyone that's hurting. There was a statistic released that in 2023, the unemployment rate for film crew people and film related workers was 62% in Los Angeles. I'm guessing it will be higher in 2024. Stop voting for representatives that don't like filming. Democrats have a super majority in the state. They are the ones in control. Vote out the negative and replace them with the positive. And lobbying for an additional $50 million in added incentives will do nothing. California needs to match Georgia at the very least. Until then, the exodus will continue.
