April is National Minority Health Month and I thought it was important to share the pros of being a minority and working in public health... Having people of color and diversity in public health is paramount for several reasons. Firstly, diverse representation ensures that the needs and perspectives of all communities are considered in health policies, programs, and research. Different cultures and ethnicities may have unique health challenges, beliefs, and practices that must be understood and addressed effectively. Secondly, diverse public health professionals can enhance trust and engagement within communities that have historically been marginalized or underserved. When individuals see people who look like them in positions of authority or expertise, they are more likely to feel understood, respected, and willing to participate in health initiatives. Thirdly, diversity in public health promotes innovation and creativity. People from different backgrounds bring unique experiences, ideas, and solutions to the table, fostering a more dynamic and responsive approach to public health challenges. Furthermore, representation in public health leadership roles is crucial for addressing systemic inequalities and advancing health equity. When decision-making bodies reflect the diversity of the populations they serve, there is a greater likelihood of policies and interventions that prioritize the needs of marginalized groups and promote health equity. Overall, the inclusion of people of color and diverse perspectives in public health is essential for ensuring equitable access to healthcare, promoting culturally competent practices, fostering trust and engagement within communities, driving innovation, and advancing health equity for all. It's not just about representation; it's about creating a more effective and inclusive approach to public health that truly serves the needs of everyone. #publichealth #healthequity #nationalminorityhealthmonth #blackmeninpublichealth #diversity

[Digital Health Citizenship: Advancing digital health and civic literacy through intergenerational dialogues] I had the pleasure of attending this panel focusing on digital health citizenship, where the speakers addressed the importance of equitable partnership with young people and developing digital skills to thrive in the digital age. There were some interesting and thought-provoking discussion points: ?? People of different generations use the same digital platforms differently - an example was that the younger generation posts much less on Instagram than older generations, but that does not equate to lower understanding or usage of the platform. It's important to have participatory research where participants are involved in discussing the methodology, framing of the issues, data analysis, and report-writing together. ?? Young people's blindspot is what the corporates are tracking of their information - it is crucial to adequately address the knowledge gap to empower users to be aware and in control of their usage. ?? Digital technologies and tools are rapidly evolving - by the time policy and regulations catch up, they often have evolved further. Therefore #education is key to navigating this ever-changing landscape and enabling responsible usage. ---------------- On the topic of digital citizenship, the DTH-Lab is creating a blueprint for digital first health systems that are: - Co-designed and governed by young people, - Responsive to young people's health needs, and ?? - Strengthen digital health citizenship. The Digital Health Citizenship Survey?will help us to hear young people’s perceptions and tailor our outputs accordingly, as we work towards building young people’s skills and literacy, and support the future health workforce. All young people are invited to fill in this survey here [https://lnkd.in/dUkZTF_K], and?build a new generation of informed and enfranchised digital health citizens ??Join us in shaping the future of Digital Health Citizenship! hashtag #digitalcitizenship #dthlab #digitaltransformation #education #digitalliteracy #civicliteracy

This National Minority Health Month, we're committed to bridging health disparities and advancing equity for all. Data has shown that minority groups are often underserved by the healthcare system – and data is key to making real change in health equity. Massive amounts of primary source data are expanding diversity in clinical trials, better informing minority patient care by accounting for social drivers of health, and more. Inovalon is proud to be part of the many organizations across healthcare contributing to advancements in health equity. While National Minority Health Month reminds us that healthcare has work left to do to deliver equal care to all communities, we’re also reminded of how far the healthcare system has come. #MinorityHealthMonth #HealthEquity

New study in #HSR from Liza M. Creel PhD, MPH?et al assess describe network structure and alignment across organizations in healthcare, public health, and social services sectors that serve pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorder (SUD) in an urban and a rural community.? WHAT IS KNOWN Pregnant and parenting women in recovery and their family members often face barriers to care and need services and supports from multiple sectors. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS There are differences in network structure and cross-sector alignment in rural and urban networks, suggesting different needs to build system capacity at a local level. CONCLUSION Cross-sector alignment may strengthen local capacity for comprehensive SUD care for pregnant and parenting women. Healthcare organizations are key players in cross-sector partnerships in the rural community, where one healthcare facility holds the central brokerage role. In contrast, public health agencies are key to cross-sector collaboration with social services in the urban community. Check out this important strategy to strive towards equity.
Accountable Communities for Health (ACHs) are formal, community-based partnerships that bring together public organizations to transform community health systems in pursuit of improved population health and well-being. A study from PHI’s Population Health Innovation Lab (PHIL), published in?Health Services Research, advances understanding of how ACHs advance equity and provides generalizable strategies that can be further investigated to optimize progress toward health equity. As one participant described, "Our equity accountability council [is] a space where we recognize that we were often asking to give feedback on whether or not a decision we were making was going to promote health equity or if there might be unintended consequences for a community that wasn't represented at the decision-making table." NEW BLOG: What’s needed to strengthen research-practice collaboration in social care? ?? Compared to health, the social care sector experiences low levels of research engagement, poor infrastructure, a lack of research skills, and low levels of evidence use. This needs to be addressed to strengthen research-practice collaboration. In this blog, Hannah Kendrick, Annette Boaz and Juliette Malley outline the findings from a recent evidence synthesis on the challenges in #ResearchEngagement, and how these can be addressed in social care. The foundation's research director and special projects intern will present the MetroWest Health Equity Timeline, discuss how local history affects our health today, and demonstrate ways this tool can promote health programming in the region. The Timeline is designed to be a 'working document' where community members contribute events that shape the present day public health landscape. Please share your suggestions for additional content with Kate Baker at [email protected]. Register today: https://lnkd.in/eR-hvXXp ~~~~ More about the timeline: A tool for education and advocacy, the MetroWest Health Equity Timeline highlights inflection points in history that shape the health disparities and inequities we observe today. ?? Exciting News! ?? I’m thrilled to share that I’ve just finished a project that’s very close to my heart—a comprehensive Health Disparities Report Card at Integral Care-Austin, TX This report highlights key health disparities across different demographics and regions, aiming to bring attention to areas that need improvement. We analyzed 24 health indicators to provide valuable insights to policymakers, healthcare providers, and the public. The goal is to help everyone make informed decisions and work towards greater health equity. ?? Some key findings from the report: 1. An in-depth look at health disparities by race, gender, and socioeconomic status. 2. Program level unit comparisons to highlight areas facing significant health challenges. 3. Diagnosis Rate, Disparity Ratios and Disparity Grade for each Health Indicator. I believe this report can make a difference in our journey to ensure everyone has access to quality healthcare, no matter their background. I couldn’t have done this without the incredible support and guidance from my mentor, Brittany Whittington, LMSW. Your insights and encouragement were crucial in bringing this project to life. Thank you so much! ?? Check out the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gxPPeF8u
