IMA President and CEO Mark Denzler, a proud member of the GACC Midwest - German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest, Inc. board of directors, recently had the opportunity to participate in a small business roundtable with Dr. Robert Habeck, German Vice Chancellor & Minister for Economic and Climate Affairs, along with Germany’s Ambassador to the United States Andreas Michaelis, and Consul General Michael Ahrens with the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Chicago. The Illinois-Germany relationship is extremely important; Germany is our 4th largest export market totaling more than $4.28 billion in 2022 according to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity; the 3rd largest FDI partner by employment with 41,000 Illinoisans working at nearly 300 German subsidiaries. Illinois exports have increased by 34 percent since 2009!

I started to think about Germany and how I enjoy working with German organization’s. Germany has a similar history to Sweden far back and we did leave those structures and matured both in their own way to become strong democratic countries with good economies. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences' decision to award the 2024 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (the Economics Prize) to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson is for helping us understand the differences in wealth between countries (organizations). People function much better together in a democracy than when silenced by fear. It's really an interesting connection, especially since our world and organization’s seems to be facing internal challenges concerning citizen/employee silence and pressure not to speak up. This could indeed be related to the work of Daron Acemoglu and the other laureates, as their research often highlights how institutional structures and power dynamics affect both economic growth and wealth disparities, which can also be observed at the organizational level. Their research shows that strong, inclusive institutions create a favorable environment for economic growth and innovation, while exclusive or repressive systems can lead to stagnation and inefficiency. The recent developments we see in for example ISO9001 might raise questions about how leadership and internal culture are managing transparency and innovation—both crucial for sustaining long-term success for the organization. So what I am saying is that soft values are a strong currency to stay with! If we as Countries want to keep up then we need to leave those noble houses behind us and makes sure everyone feels the psychological safety to contribute together in team work. Yes I call it Zusammen! Hohenzollern Castle, Germany This onetime seat of a noble house is no longer a home, strictly speaking. The current edition of Hohenzollern Castle was built in the mid-1800s by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, a son of House Hohenzollern who resolved to rebuild his family's original seat of power. Though the king's romantic vision of a medieval (or some might say fairy-tale) castle was realized with resounding success, the estate never became any Hohenzollern's permanent residence. Has competition in the European Union weakened over the past few decades? I've been told that today is the annual "Tell a Fairytale Day" and although LinkedIn does seem to have it's share of fanciful tales already I'll add a little story of my own...and a few recommendations! ? Once Upon a Time there was a handsome young Prince (or fresh faced Export Manager) who set out to conquer half the Kingdom, slay dragons and competitors and impress fair maiden customers. Over the years, he encountered trolls and Evil Queens but received a tremendous amount of support as well. I'd name names but I would just forget someone - safe to say I have been fortunate to work with some excellent leaders over the years. ? During his quest, our Prince also armed himself with magical weapons of Research, Guidelines and Expert Advice. And that's actually my purpose with this Fairytale - I want to share some of the resources I've come across and hopefully pick up some new ones from the comments. ? I want to recommend Erin Myers excellent book "The Culture Map". A next generation version of Edward Hall and Geert Hofstedte's seminal works on cross cultural traits. The Author has made resources available to use the book to map out your own teams etc. so have a look at: ? https://lnkd.in/gWRGpGrM ? I also want to recommend Greg Seminara of Export Solutions and his guides and checksheets. I don't know Greg personally and I don't have any financial gain from promoting this - I just know that his notes have helped me and they could probably help you too. ? I want to recommend you make you of your professional networks - for me this could be Danish Export Association , The Trade Council, Danes Worldwide or Erhvervshus Midtjylland and the other local business centers. Other countries have similar resources available! I also want to bring to light private actors such as Kombination ApS , Automation People A/S and other great partners. Finally, I want to recommend drawing upon personal networks. Be it Rotary International, Lions Clubs International or another group there is often someone who can guide you to the local specialists. Just remember to give back to the networks as well when someone comes to you. Personally, I have benefitted greatly from my participation in JCI (Junior Chamber International) and JCI Danmark and the network of senior members. Questions? It's hard to believe that already 10 years have passed since we approved the IPSASB Conceptual Framework in the very same place, the #Berlaymont building of #EuropeanCommission. Celebrating 35 Years of Jean Monnet Actions The European Commission has marked the 35th anniversary of Jean Monnet (JM) Actions, an initiative that has been instrumental in promoting European values and citizenship through education. As part of Erasmus+, JM Actions have grown in popularity and impact, but with increased competition for funding. Two reports highlight the evolution and key trends of JM Actions and JM Chairs. During the recent anniversary conference in Brussels, participants discussed the role of JM Actions in fostering cohesion and serving as a diplomatic tool. ?? Yes yes yes !!! The 20th Berlin Conference, BC24, will take place on 7 and 8 November. Over 500 people from all generations and from many countries around the world have already signed up to work on and for Europe from a cultural perspective once again. Once again, many small and large conversations will take place at the Brandenburg Gate and near the Holocaust memorial shortly before 9 November. This geographical and historical proximity has been decisive in previous conferences and will also set the tone this year. Too often we in Berlin forget the urgency that these places have for others too. Volker Hassemer explained it this way: "The European Union has been a political project from the very beginning: founded and driven by a strong political will and at the same time repeatedly unsettled and jeopardised by national policies. A project "from above" and not "from below". At the beginning of our century, it became increasingly clear that after the fall of the Iron Curtain, these political uncertainties made working on Europe even more complicated. On the other hand, Europe had just now been given opportunities that had previously been unimaginable. That was the reason for "A Soul For Europe". Four people - Nele Hertling and Volker Hassemer in Berlin, Steve Austen in Amsterdam and Hugo de Greef in Brussels (all responsible for their cities' European Capital of Culture programmes) - have launched a project based on three principles: - Europeans must hold themselves accountable for Europe's success. The European Union is more than a political project. - Europe's culture - its achievements, its experiences, its protagonists - must be mobilised for the development of the Union. Culture for Europe. - This requires a new kind of interaction and co-operation between culture and politics in the interests of Europe's future. In 2004, the four initiators presented these principles for discussion together with a large group of young, predominantly Central European cultural professionals at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The political leaders of Europe and the German host country accepted the invitation (Barroso, Pack, P?ttering, Swoboda, Brook, Geremek, Leinen, Schr?der, Fischer, von Weizs?cker, Genscher.....). This was the birth of the Berlin Conferences over 20 years."
