We’re pleased to share a new impact report for the East Metro Main Street Economic Revitalization Program, which supported 42 Saint Paul nonprofits and businesses that faced immense challenges the past four years due to the pandemic, civil unrest and other obstacles. With support from Mardag Foundation and other funding partners, the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development granted $3.7 million to nonprofits and $3.3 million to businesses in the Snelling-University-Rice Cultural District, the East Side community and along West Seventh Street in Saint Paul. 100% of the funded projects serve communities that have been historically under- and dis-invested by traditional funding, and 85% of the projects are owned or led by people of color. We’re proud to have been a partner in this program and support the vitality of East Metro communities. “The benefits of local ownership are about agency in the control of your community—controlling what happens, what tenants come in, what businesses occupy the spaces,” says?Ajia Morris, founder of?LocalCode Kansas City, a development company helping communities build wealth and wellbeing through local ownership of real estate. Her local organization is supported by a national nonprofit, LocalCode, founded by?Jeff Mendelsohn. “Community-led initiatives tend to be smaller projects,” says Mendelsohn, “and the big neighborhood-impacting projects tend to not happen until somebody wants to come in and gentrify a community.” LocalCode is looking to upend that trend, facilitating large mixed-use projects with the support of local leaders and community buy-in. The two answered a few of our questions about their approach, their successes, and the obstacles LocalCode has had to overcome.?Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/d6AUxyi7

When we say we make data-driven investments that are informed by the needs of the community, this is what we mean: Rocket Community Fund's flagship Neighbor to Neighbor program hires residents as #volunteers who go door-to-door to provide their neighbors with resources and information to help them stay in their homes. It's also a fact-finding mission, where we learn about the issues most concerning to residents. In 2023, they launched Neighbor to Neighbor in #Atlanta. Based on those findings, we've begun investing in programs and partnerships to better support residents with critical housing resources. Renton Regional Community Foundation (RRCF) is shining a spotlight on #SouthKingCounty to spark increased investment in the programs and people that make this region great. While RRCF’s geographic scope is broad, they have a unique niche in understanding both the assets and the challenges of this region – and they want to share that knowledge with other funders. LeAnne Moss, executive director, explains how RRCF is using its strategic framework to guide its efforts in our latest blog: https://ow.ly/RrQr50UoA7E

As a funders collaborative that has raised over $50 million from 160 donors, We Rise Together: For an Equitable & Just Recovery (led by The Chicago Community Trust) has been able to invest in more than 40 real estate development projects in the past three years. This model also affords a multifaceted evaluation that’s helping us understand the impact of place-based investment. For example, with evaluation partner Mastercard Data Services, we’re learning more about the importance of developing along and near commercial corridors. New investments on bustling corridors like Ogden Avenue in North Lawndale, 47th Street in Back of the Yards, and Chicago Avenue in Austin can spark exponential economic benefits. That’s because when a new business or community facility opens and draws new traffic, those consumers have the “opportunity to spend,” and do just that. Increased spending in the areas near We Rise Together investments has proven to be correlated with the presence of many nearby pre-existing businesses. As more of the projects We Rise Together has invested in open their doors, we will continue to share what we’re learning through our ongoing evaluation. #Chicago #Philanthropy #WeRiseWednesdays

Formed in response to the economic challenges following the 2008 recession, the coalition aims to address pressing regional issues and promote sustainable economic development. One of the coalition's primary initiatives is the enhancement of trail systems, which are seen as vital infrastructure for connecting communities and improving overall quality of life. By focusing on projects that support both environmental sustainability and economic growth, the coalition works to align stakeholders around shared goals and objectives. In the 1990s, many region-wide agencies collaborated to focus on the housing crisis in which they joined forces to create the Housing Solutions Network. Stakeholders such as Habitat for Humanity International, Goodwill Industries International, Networks Northwest, and Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency hoped this collaboration would address barriers to affordable housing options. A new organization was needed. This independent nonprofit would be very focused on addressing the systemic problems with zoning laws, development financing, and public-private partnerships. If these barriers could be removed, a new and strong foundation could be built, one that would serve as a stabilizing force for a healthier, more sustainable, thriving Northwest Michigan. ?? In 2018, Housing North was born. This is why ?50th Fun Fact ? is...... We incubated Housing North and spun it off into the nonprofit organization it is now.
