Silty Clay or Clayey Silt, that is the question! Silty clay is common in Ontario, making it a key soil of concern for geotechnical engineers. Silt is difficult to differentiate from clay, but hydrometer tests can help. Pure silt can exhibit dilatancy and is difficult to improve. This type of soil retains moisture and is hard to drain, sometimes resulting in catastrophic consequences for building projects, if not handled correctly. Soil with a very high silt fraction can be challenging to characterize as it can behave like sand or clay.
