Keep advocating for SB 198 Georgia! SB 198, sponsored by Senator Sally Harrell, would create the Georgians with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Innovation Commission. The goal of the commission is to develop new solutions for ending the NOW/COMP waitlist, employment, housing, and other important issues for the disability community so that adults with I/DD can live, work, and thrive in our communities. The bill has currently passed through the Senate, and is ready to be heard in the House Public Health Committee, where it can be voted on and passed onto the House floor for a vote. This would bring SB 198 one step closer to becoming a law. If you would like to see the Georgians with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Innovation Commission become a reality, make your voice heard now using our Phone2Action advocacy tool. This week is Learning Disability Week and it's crucial to shine a light on the often overlooked issue of domestic abuse among disabled individuals. The theme "Do you see me?" prompts us to challenge societal barriers and recognize the invaluable contributions of people with learning disabilities. Alarmingly, disabled women are twice as likely to experience domestic abuse and more likely to suffer prolonged periods of violence before seeking help. They also face unique dynamics of abuse, often involving severe coercion and control from carers or family members. These statistics highlight the urgent need for awareness, support, and intervention. Let's use this week to advocate for change and ensure that everyone is seen, heard, and protected. #LearningDisabilityWeek #DomesticAbuseAwareness #SupportAndAdvocacy #Inclusion Mencap

This amicus brief has one core argument: the federal government has a responsibility to protect those with the least access to healthcare, including pregnant people with disabilities in states such as Idaho. Idaho’s #abortionban affects all of us, but it posts a higher risk to pregnant people with disabilities. People with disabilities are more likely to: ? live in poverty ? face transportation barriers ? have medically complex pregnancies ? endure provider bias For these reasons, we have filed an amicus brief with Covington & Burling LLP @womenenabledinternational Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) & @nationalwomenlawcenter arguing that EMTALA (the law that mandates emergency care) protects your right to a health-preserving abortion.

Advocating for the Well-Being of Children with Disabilities Every child, regardless of ability, deserves the opportunity to thrive in a nurturing and inclusive environment. Children with disabilities face unique challenges, but when we invest in accessible education, healthcare, and community support, we empower them to reach their full potential. Inclusion isn't just about building ramps or adding specialized equipment—it’s about ensuring that every child feels valued, heard, and supported. Let’s advocate for policies and programs that foster the holistic well-being of all children, so they can grow, play, and learn alongside their peers. #Chukwuebuka_Godspower_Eze #DisabilityInclusion #ChildWellBeing #InclusiveEducation #HealthForAll #UNICEF #EqualOpportunities #Advocacy

Important Bill is awaiting Governor Newsome's signature - if you feel that individuals with developmental disabilities deserve competent care and services, please take 30 seconds to click this link and send a quick email to Gov. Newsome! You can also get some more information at this link if you would like to learn more about it before sending an email in support. https://p2a.co/oRsYmMq This bill, AB 2423, has passed the Senate floor. Governor Newsome needs to know that Californians care about this, so he will put pen to paper and finalize this bill. AB 2423 creates the requirement for regular review and consideration of rates paid for service providers who support individuals with developmental disabilities with much-needed services. Services for this population are specialized, and therefore, providers should be compensated for their specialized skills and experience. Feel free to share this post! #KeepThePromise #TheFutureIncludesUs #IDDPathToThrive?

Steps in the right direction!
??BIG NEWS! ?? Last night, thanks to your advocacy, members of Congress removed a harmful provision from the Appropriations bill that would have allowed the continued use of electric shock devices at the Judge Rotenberg Center. The disability community was specifically mentioned and thanked for meeting with all members of the committee to educate them on the provision. We are grateful for your continued advocacy to keep people with disabilities safe! #StopTheShock

Question for you all… Is it time to change the disability symbol? ?? The current symbol has been a recognisable representation of disability for decades, but as society evolves, so do our perspectives and the language we use. Many advocate for a more inclusive and empowering symbol that reflects the diversity of the disabled community. Some suggest redesigning the symbol to include various forms of disability, while others believe it should celebrate the capabilities of individuals rather than focus solely on limitations. What do you think? Should we stick with tradition or embrace a new representation that resonates more with today's values? Let’s hear your thoughts! Your voice matters! Share your opinions in the comments below and read more about the topic in our latest blog at https://lnkd.in/e6sedNuz #DisabilityAwareness #InclusiveDesign #RepresentationMatters #CommunityVoices #ChangeIsPossible

August issue of the PADDC Spotlight! Along with our Council updates, this month's theme is Disability Justice & Equity. Disability Justice is a framework that recognizes how ableism is connected to other forms of oppression and the need to bring about equity in all of the areas.
