Color that changes lives. As most of you know, I am a fervent believer that color influences us deeply and may change perceptions, moods and even deeper emotions and feeling. That is why I love projects like this one from Kadre Architects in California where color is used exponentially to transition those who experience homelessness into spaces for revitalization, safety and dignity and yes, why not, some fun. This project shows how you can transform an existing structure into something relevant and new for those in need at a relatively low cost. Enjoy the read! https://lnkd.in/dM6scbqm

?? Early Engagement in Action: The Future of Regent Street's Public Realm ?? Link to ECF's full blogpost: https://lnkd.in/e9H7WRhM Community engagement timing is crucial for project success. A standout example is the Regent Street Public Realm Vision, where the team prioritised early engagement with visitors, local residents and businesses. Innovatively, the project team went beyond traditional methods by hosting six workshops and four pop-up events right on Regent Street. They swapped static exhibition boards for interactive ones where people could leave feedback on post-it notes while shopping or commuting. At ECF, we're inspired by such creative strategies that are tailor made to include the community from the start. We're eager to see the ongoing progress of this project managed by Westminster City Council and The Crown Estate. ?? Pruitt Igoe, The High Cost Of Modernism Today, we are taking on a tale about the challenges of modernist architecture in addressing urban housing needs effectively, making it the most complex example in our series. The Pruitt-Igoe Housing Project in St. Louis, Missouri, is widely regarded as an architectural failure due to a combination of poor design choices, inadequate funding, and broader socio-economic issues that plagued its existence. Some of the issues are Flawed Architectural Design: With High-Rise Configuration?and Poorly Designed Common Spaces, this design did not foster community interaction but instead quickly became sites of crime rather than places for social interaction. Maintenance Issues: The project’s reliance on rent from low-income tenants made it vulnerable to financial instability and physical neglect. Crime and vandalism: Widespread opposition to public housing initiatives limited financial support and contributed to the negative perceptions surrounding projects like Pruitt-Igoe. The complex became a hotspot for criminal activity, with gangs and vandalism rampant, earning it a reputation as a dangerous and neglected area. Today, the Pruitt-Igoe site remains vacant, with plans for new development pending. The project’s complex history serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of considering broader social, economic, and political contexts when designing and implementing public housing initiatives. The Lesson: Focus on human-centered design, strong funding, and supportive policy to build safe, sustainable communities in public housing. #architecturefailures #architecture #webdesign #interiordesign #story

In Sarría-Sant Gervasi, Barcelona, Spain, a homeless women’s shelter capable of housing 100, utilized sustainable building methods to achieve its vision. Using parallel cross-laminated timber for structural support, the building limited its need for carbon intensive materials. By using pre-fabricated, cross-laminated timber, the project was able to reduce on site construction waste and speed up the construction process. The timber also acts as a great insulator which is important for energy consumption reduction. Porches, Terraces, Courtyards, and Gardens allow for a connection between the inhabitants and the natural environment. The project is meant to serve as a place for restoration for its people and building a connection with nature, helps that process. These outdoor spaces also provide an atmosphere for its residents to connect and interact with other inhabitants. Warm and inviting interior spaces bathed in natural sunlight, strengthen inhabitants connection with the natural environment. Strategically placed windows and doors, allow for the movement of fresh air throughout the interior spaces as well. Projects like this one, showcase the ability for a diverse array of building types and uses, finding ways to implement sustainable building methods. Site, budget, climate constraints should not be stopping us from pursuing a more sustainable world. We’re all in this together #sustainabledesign #sustainablearchitecture #sustainability #renewabledesign #renewableenergy #spain #architecture #architecturedesign #design #europe

The epidemic of loneliness can be partially attributed to place – the design and program of the public realm deeply matters to human interaction. Does your home, street, neighborhood, town or city intentionally encourage social connection? As the problem of loneliness grows, The Congress for the New Urbanism calls on urbanists and planners to design for social interaction.
