On the latest episode of Build It. They'll Come. with Helen Dalley meet scientist-turned-entrepreneur Nick Murphy, founder of GenEmbryomics - a super smart dude on the frontier of reproductive medicine. Nick (pictured below) with his small, highly skilled team developed a world-first -- a pre-implantation genetic screening test for IVF embryos, capable of detecting several thousand severe or life-threatening genetic diseases. Thereby giving parents more information at the pre-implantation stage, to have far better outcomes. And it's one single, simple test. The genius is, this test involves whole genome sequencing of the pre-implantation embryo, and of the genetic parents. Nick Murphy's startup GenEmbryomics is commercialising their test, to be offered through existing IVF clinics, at as low a price as possible, and to as many couples going through IVF, as need it. Although university educated in Melbourne and now working from his Melbourne lab, Nick Murphy's test isn't yet commercially available in Australia. GenEmbryomics is in the process of securing patents for it in the massive IVF market in the United States, worth some US$9 billion, with plans to expand into Europe. They intend listing on New York's Nasdaq exchange by mid-2024, with the help of chair Paul Viney and Artesian (Alternative Investments) Venture Partners and Rohan Gray. What a wild and fascinating journey for this scientist and genetic testing specialist since he started GenEmbryomics, building it up from scratch in 2019.
