For feminist and gender justice movements, accessing funding is an administrative nightmare, with due diligence processes that require days of document preparation and filling out complicated online portals. For the fortunate few who manage to navigate the administrative maze and receive funding;?the burden of extensive over-reporting remains a hurdle that absorbs valuable resources away from doing the actual work?of advancing gender justice. Moving Money, Building Movements – a pre-AWID Forum day for funders – is a space to showcase the common application forms and other innovative practices that challenge the status quo in current grant making practices. It’s an opportunity for funders to reimagine a new way of working that creates a lasting positive change. Adopting common application and reporting forms is not without challenges, but it can be done, and it?must?be done if we are serious about moving the needle forward on social issues. The common form initiative – co-created by feminist funds and private funders – can set the blueprint for other networks and alliances to take inspiration from, and more importantly, to see it as the floor and not the ceiling of reimagining the relationship between funders and feminist movements. https://lnkd.in/gh5Zp-Y9

"Women tend to give and invest in very different ways from men ... So I do think that a lot of our work is more focused on understanding and working with the people and the wealth industry at the forefront of that change; being able to share how that can positively affect the world in order to address some of the systemic strategies and balances such as gender equality and gender justice, climate justice, economic justice." This insightful piece in Proximate with Shake the Table's founding partner Swatee Deepak looks at the movement of trust-based philanthropy - founded on the principle that trust is key to creating strong and lasting funder-grantee relationships. At Heading for Change, 90% of our charitable contributions flow to investments and 10% to grants, with majority of the grant capital allocated to build the capacity of the field to move more and smarter capital into climate and gender investments. We provide philanthropic capital both to already active entities and start-up initiatives that align with our dual mission of promoting gender equity and addressing climate and biodiversity challenges. And as part of our broader field building efforts, we are committed to transparently sharing our approach and tools and we hope our model inspires philanthropists to see what it looks like to build a portfolio at the gender and climate nexus. In the world of philanthropy, the ending or termination of a grant contract with a grantee partner often reverberates far beyond the immediate financial impact. Whether driven by the conclusion of a funding cycle, operational changes or shifts in strategic priorities, the loss of a funding relationship, even an anticipated one, can inadvertently destabilize the very movements funders aim to uplift. And alternative resources and support, especially in the funding environment today, are often hard to come by, especially for feminist, women’s and LGBTIQ+ rights as funding priorities change. FRIDA has crafted a transition strategy that aims to mitigate against this by being responsive to grantee partners’ unique journeys and quests for sustainability. Find out more in the link below

Question prompt at the end! “And there are some unique aspects to how women like to give. Women tend to give more collaboratively. They tend to enjoy giving together. And they tend to engage deeply with the organizations and the individuals that benefit from their generosity.” On the flipside, are there general differences in the levels of “deep engagement” offered to donors among male and female fundraisers? And what does “engaging deeply” mean/look like to you? Curious to hear your thoughts and personal experiences - from the donor perspective and from professional fundraisers.

The world has been talking about Melinda French Gates’ departure from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Hear Rena's thoughts about Maverick Collective by PSI's Co-Founder, Melinda's next moves, in the latest Alliance magazine piece. As shared, in full, Melinda has been so influential to philanthropy, not just because of the checks she's written, but because of her mastery of the issues she cares about. Her combination of curiosity, intelligence, and commitment to getting proximate to those on the frontlines, are hallmarks of her philanthropy that have influenced countless others to go deeper in their giving. Melinda’s ability to inspire and activate others is what led to her founding Maverick Collective and Pivotal Ventures, and backing initiatives like Co-Impact, that are transforming philanthropy and the state of women and girls. At the Gates Foundation, she was instrumental in ensuring that reproductive health and gender equality became core parts of their work. Whether she doubles down on current efforts or creates something new, we are confident it will follow this thoughtful, collaborative, and impactful approach. We could not agree more with Melinda that there has never been a more urgent time to support women, girls, and the road to gender equality. The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and backlash against women's reproductive health have further exacerbated gender disparities globally, with UN Women estimating it will take 300 years to achieve gender equality at current rates of progress. While Melinda's efforts in recent years have focused on the uphill battle for women’s rights and equity in the United States, we know that she never lost her connection to the fights for equality across the world. She has demonstrated that choosing between "local" and "global" is a false binary that no longer fits in our hyper-connected world.?We hope she will continue to use her power and influence to help global efforts to restore rights and protect women’s access to healthcare. Whatever Melinda chooses to do in her next chapter of philanthropy and activism, we know it will undoubtedly shape the future of millions of women and girls around the world. We are excited for her next adventure, and hope others are inspired to join her.

In a compelling announcement, Melinda French Gates shared her plan to donate $1B through Pivotal Ventures over the next two years to fund work that advances gender equity in the U.S. and abroad. Melinda's plan includes major grants to critical organizations working to protect #womensrights and advance their power and influence, including an emerging focus on #reproductiverights and #birthequity - spaces that are close to our hearts at Afton Bloom. In addition, Pivotal Ventures is taking an exciting and novel approach to grant-making that provides 12 global leaders with $20M each to distribute as they see fit. At Afton Bloom, we are always excited to see new approaches to philanthropy and we are thrilled that this will put more dollars in the hands of diverse issue area experts and leaders. We are particularly excited that our brilliant partner Dr Alfiee Breland-Noble is one of the selected leaders. Dr Alfiee Breland-Noble is a visionary advocate for the #mentalhealth needs of youth of color through through her non-profit, The AAKOMA Project, Inc. Her bold approach combines research, resource dissemination, and storytelling to pave the way for systemic change in care delivery. We cannot wait to see how Dr Alfiee Breland-Noble and the other selected organizations and leaders advance #genderequity in the U.S. and globally at this critical time. Given that 75% of nonprofit workers are women, it’s striking that only 42% of nonprofit boards are led by women, and this figure drops to 33% in larger nonprofits. DHR’s Sara Garlick Lundberg sheds light on how implicit biases, such as the preference for traditionally male-associated traits like "executive presence" and assumptions about women's family commitments, delay progress. While some progress is being made, Sara emphasizes that change is still too slow. Check out the full article to explore her insights on steps to accelerate gender equity in nonprofit leadership. https://lnkd.in/gHJMdHHn #nonprofit #womeninleadership #executivesearch
