Hiring can be an ethical conundrum My hiring approach, offering competitive raises and letting things unfold naturally, proved ineffective during the hiring frenzy of 2021-2022. COVID triggered digital adoption in a way we had never seen before, meaning businesses had to invest and build resources, making that phase an employee market. Many candidates accepted offers only to decline later, significantly hindering our efforts, especially in a startup environment where hiring is often sequential. We adapted by constantly maintaining backup candidates, but it's time-consuming and labor-intensive. The current tech market has shifted dramatically, with numerous qualified and experienced candidates open to pay cuts due to layoffs. While hiring these individuals, especially when they are willing to accept lower salaries and are now within our hiring budget, I grapple with the ethical implications. It feels opportunistic, even though it could be seen as offering support during a difficult time. I’m curious to hear your thoughts. How are you approaching this dilemma? #hiring #layoffs

Currently, it's an employer's market. It has been a while since most of us have been exposed to one. The key to this is to shift your mindset. The mindset needs to change from 'how can you help me' to 'how can I help you'. It took me THOUSANDS of job applications to land the job I have today. Not 100s. Thousands! I had to take up #contractwork in December and before that, I was unemployed for 6 months. #layoffs are tough, and the tech landscape is harsher than ever. As someone who's spent his entire professional career in #staffing, I want to start sharing bits of advice that helped me get the job I have today. My #1 tip is to use a Chrome extension to help you quickly fill out applications, as we all know hiring is a numbers game. I used Simplify pretty religiously as it's great for Greenhouse apps and helps you fly through the dreaded #workday job applications from hell (do better, Workday). In the same vein, you'll find yourself answering a lot of repetitive questions. Every time I answered an open-ended question, I added the question and my answer to a running document for easy copy-paste action. I was not about to explain why I love #marketing 3000 times. This can be a huge time-saver! It's beyond comprehension how so many amazing, hard-working, and highly skilled people have been out of work for six months or more. Seriously?!? These aren't just numbers we're talking about; these are experienced professionals who've dedicated years, if not decades, to honing their craft and contributing to their fields. And yet, here they are, stuck in this inexplicable employment limbo. How does this even make sense? How are so many incredible individuals not being snapped? It's a puzzle that points to deeper issues within our hiring ecosystems – be it the impersonal nature of automated screening processes or a mismatch in the recognition of skills and opportunities. It's time for a serious conversation about what's going wrong and how we can bridge this gap. Completely agree with this view point. Question for recruiters.. if someone is unemployed are you less likely to hire them over someone who is currently working and passively looking for a new role? Is there a cut off? Someone is unemployed for 6 or more months? Let’s break this down and shed some light on the situation. In reality we all want to know the ins and outs of landing our next role in this market. What’s working and not working. This seems like a relevant place to start.

You do not need to use a recruiter in your job search, but here are a few reasons why we may be helpful. ? Market insights - We know the trends, we live the ups and downs. Curious how the layoffs will impact hiring in Q3? We can make a pretty educated guess (anyone that claims otherwise is selling a course). ? Company insight - Fun fact, not all clients are awesome. Less fun fact, none of them will tell you so. While no good recruiter will throw their client under the bus, they can provide you tools to navigate/avoid potential bad apples. ? Salary insight - Not just what that specific role pays, but what YOU, at this stage in your career, with x and y certifications/training should be targeting. ? Resume insight - Working 1:1 with hiring managers gives us a ton of info on what they are looking for, beyond the job description. There are many more, but these are all used on a daily basis and cost you nothing. Any I missed? Aside from the ghosting, we're not so bad! #recruiting

This week I joined Rob Stevenson on Hired’s #TalkTalenttoMe podcast to share my predictions for 2024 #techhiring. In addition to #AI and #remotework, we dove into another highly relevant topic – #layoffs. In our survey for The Future of Tech Hiring eBook, 68% of tech employers say they’d feel confident re-hiring employees laid off from their companies. However, only 15% of unemployed tech workers would definitely accept an offer from an employer who’d laid them off. I shared with Rob that trust is a key part of maintaining positive relationships with employees. Many companies did right by talent and will have an easier time getting the “boomerang talent” (laid off employees who return as candidates) back because they lived values out even throughout layoffs. However, I’ve seen so many companies handle layoffs poorly over the past year and a half. These employers will have a small chance of getting laid off employees back and new recruits given damage to their employer branding. I encourage them to be upfront in the recruiting process, share what they’ve learned, and stand by their values to rebuild trust with #jobseekers. LinkedIn just introduced AI message drafts, which automatically create personalized messages for recruiters, hiring managers, and, honestly, anyone you may be interested in hiring from. Incorporating both of your profiles drafts a thoughtful message. Those who put themselves out there will get the job. My inbox has been flooded with opportunities since I started posting on LinkedIn, and I want you to have those opportunities too. You should update your headline, summary, and skills. Recruiters with a current position get up to four times more views of your profile if you add experience, and recruiters with more than one position get five times more views if you add experience. It takes into account both your and the recipient's profiles.
